You can use as much blocking as needed,most beaver could care less how much you use.
When blocking off wide areas,I use thinner dead material(thin logs or sticks0.I place them ,so that one end is just between the jaws--then they run parallel to the bank--blocking off several feet.You can use several(one on top of the other0Just make sure,they do not interfere with the jaws when they close.
The great thing about castor mounds and 330's---you can bring the beaver to where you want to catch them.
Like Newton,I make my own mounds,and rarely set ones a beaver has made.
