IMO the PVC does stick out very nice & makes the coon work it hard so with decent trap placement you got'em. Also it is very quick to put in.
But in the water you will miss alot of mink & on land you with miss alot of canines. I don't like it. I would use smear & pocket sets in the water & double dirt holes on the land. That way you can pick up your other visiters. But once agian it is very fast & effective on the coon. My opinion on the PVC set.

Another place the really work well is in a couple inches of water out from a sand bar.

When i trap coon I trap coon i don't target fox or coyotes. And I sure don't want to catch mink when there worth very little. So yes the PVC set Is pretty coon specific. I have caught some fox but It's not a fox set. The coon really work the set so guiding Isn't so important. I know lots of trappers shove the PVC Into the bank and place the trap under the lip of the pipe. I feel with this trap placement you miss lots of coon. The coon stands On It's hind feet with borh front feet on the pipe. The coons hind feet are quite a way's back when it stands. Do I run 100s of theses sets,No but they do have their place on the coon line.

Also, if you have to buy the elbows, it can add up to be a lot of $$ if you're putting a lot of them out!
Instead, cut the pipe off at a 45-degree angle, slant the pipe into the ground with the low-end of the angle-cut down and pointing toward the trap (which is firmly bedded in the mud or ground).
I'm like Gary/The Beav and place my trap a little further back, away from the pipe, & use guides. A medium sized rock, placed on the side you expect the coon to come from will guide him right around the rock and onto your trap. The rock only needs to be a little above the water level. You can use a stick in the same manner and it works too.....
Place your trap between the rock and the pipe. Anchor it good or put 'em on a slider into deeper water.
OH, if you're setting the pipe in-the-water, but sure to put a plug of grass in the pipe before you put your bait/lure in. The bait won't wash-away or dilute in the water and will work much longer.
I don't use a lot of them, but I do use 'em and they DO work!

I have used them with good success in the water, but would like to learn how to use them effectively on land. i believe that they could be put in with some speed and effectiveness on land. what i am asking is the people who use them on land how do you set them up on land with the trap placement angle of pipe etc. pictures, along with some instuctions would be great. Also could a person get away with not covering the trap with loose dirt that would cause the coon to dig but rather bed the trap below ground and cover with say grass instead.
