Use them all the time. I made them 8 foot and made my own locks.

For locks, take a double stake swivel and bend it to 90 degrees, slides right down conduit pipe and lock there for coon and mink and stuff. That pipe probably would not work for beaver the the lock would on a stiffer pipe.....jk

I carry 50 pounds or more AWAY from a beaver set, hopefully several times, so I don't mind carrying a bag of rocks in once.

For the same reasons I like folding cages, I never bothered with drowning rods... they won't fit inside my Samurai.

Chain seems like the best of both worlds, tougher than cable, more portable than rod.
Definitely worth consideration.

All of you that get the MTP Catalog have seen the picture of Tim Caven and a big pile of Beaver.

If you look close you will see a pile of Drowning rods in the background. That is how to put up big numbers, and get it done efficently. Run them down a rod or a chain and hide the whole works only feet from a road !

In some private remote locations on my line, I have rods leaning against a tree. Ready for this, or the next season !

This is the set up I use. Haven't bought rod or rerod for some time so can't say which is cheaper.

It is. 1/2" coldroll is about 12$ a joint while 1/2" rebar is about 4$ a joint.
