Sledgehammer has a good point using muskrat. I save mine in plastic gallon ice cream buckets and freeze until ready to thaw and use...I can usually fit 5 or 6 carcasses in there. I cut them in half and use in mink boxes when the snow flies. Also, blood from the muskrats pools in the bottom and I pour it off into squeeze bottles to freshen up weasel boxes. Remember to gut the rats before putting them in the buckets or they will spoil faster and lose freshness.

I use creek chubs often. I don't cut them up though I think they have a fresher smell used whole with out the guts exposed. Fresh frozen muskrat and mink are my other two go to baits for mink.

I have caught about $600 worth of mink in the last 2 weeks but I do not use bait.... I am more comfortable just making blind sets.

Barkstone,
All of the above bait work great. I believe that a pockets set has more to offer a mink. But dont pass up those good blinds sets. once you find a good blind set that is structure (bridge wall rock, fence, rubble pile & ect. Keep an invantory there great year after year.
After you have caught your mink. I use the Skinned male rear quarters & the whole female mink in my pockets. And I always take my knife & cut the rear gland before putting them in my pocket set.
One other bait I found to be fair pocket bait is "deer" There are pleanty of road kill on my trapline. It works as a great change up if you stay in one spot for long.

Vinke,

THanks,

Krusty, Mink have low tolerance to food type poisoning and seek fresh food out.......When available ....is my understanding..... Also I have never caught an otter on "Old" bait

Vinke,
Thanks.
Lucky for me, I have access to a fair supply of fresh muskrat carcasses (as well as half a dozen, frozen the day they were caught). And a good supply of beaver meat (one 58 pounds, and one 38 pounds, before skinning).
I also have some slightly tainted frozen beef (stew chunks), I guess that's what I'll use in my weasel boxes.

Bullheads, bullheads and bullheads are what I use. They seem to hold up better than carp or suckers.
