stitchit trapper Registered: 08/18/08 Posts: 314 Loc: michigan	Is there any difference in the wax one would buy at a walmart for canning, vs. from a trap supplier? I am running very low on it, and am in a rush to get the wax on the traps. Thanks, Chris

Jonathan trapper Registered: 12/23/06 Posts: 7431 Loc: Northwestern New York(Elder)	Fill your wax pot up with canning paraffin wax. It has worked for me with 55 years of trap preparation on my resume' spiked with one part of refined beeswax to 4-5 parts paraffin to avoid flaking. You do not have to go that far right now, add the canning wax and you will be just fine, and good to go without worry. It is all paraffin, including unscented candle wax and the soy based waxes. coop trapper Registered: 12/22/06 Posts: 1837 Loc: De	Yup, GULF canning paraffin. 1 oz. rosin to 10 lbs of wax. Just add a couple of lbs every year or so, and rosin maybe every 5. Horn trapper Registered: 12/24/06 Posts: 410 Loc: Beaman Iowa 44	I buy my wax at Hobby Lobby in 10 pound blocks and added a toilet bowl ring (new of course) to the first 30 pounds and have been very happy wiht the results. The toilet bowl ring is a softer wax and seems to make the candle wax a bit less flakey much the same as the rosen will. Rosen is avalable at the bowling alley. No matter what you use for wax; The most importand thing is to allow the trap to get as hot as the wax before removing it. This assures an even thin coat of wax. if it is milky looking when it dries it was pulled too soon. The trap should look wet when it cools not waxy looking. Edited by Horn (11/13/08 06:26 PM)

Ron Marsh trapper Registered: 12/25/06 Posts: 509 Loc: PA Venango Co.	DO NOT USE SOY WAX. If you do you are headed for problems down the road. odor and rusting when it breaks down. Soy wax is not paraffin. It is a wax made by blending Soy oil with steric acid. Jelly wax or canning wax is a low melt parafin wax that has large crystels. It will flake off by itself. NWMO trapper Registered: 12/22/06 Posts: 700 Loc: Barnard, Missouri	Yep hobby lobby is the cheapest place to get it too. $15 for 10# I got a 8qt stock pot at big lots and worked perfectly. I just sat it on my wood stove to melt it. I found that setting the traps up on the edge of the stove heated the traps up enough to where it took alot less time to get the traps up to temp. you could look in the pot and see the trap change colors from white back to the steel color worked slick could do 2-3 #3 montanas at a time. _________________________ http://wcctaxidermy.bravehost.com/

I am not a polymer research chemist, but do know that soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil - a different process than wax made from petroleum distillates. However, I was under the impression that soy wax was put up as a blend with paraffin in it - did not think it was made and sold as "pure" soy wax. When I see the term: "blended soy wax," does that simply mean that the blend part is merely steric acid and no other ingredients? Jonathan

bobkat trapper Registered: 12/24/06 Posts: 189 Loc: virginia	NWMO I too found that preheating my traps gives me a better wax job. Seems to penetrate better. I lay mine on a metal barrel lid over the fire working out side with the wax and dye.
