I began using some pvc pipe sets for coons this year and had really good success with them. They are fast, cheap, simple and very effective. Does anyone else use pvc pipes for coon?

JUst bought a video on pipe trapping coon and mink. WOW. Gotta give it a try next year. Very nice technique.

I watched the video your talking about Im sure. I make my own pipe paste for them. I simply use a mixture of sardines w/oil, blood/bone meal, a couple teaspoons of corn starch (to thicken it up a bit), some used cooking oil, and a teaspoon of shellfish oil. I just mix it and add the meal to it until I get a fairly thick paste. Just cram the paste into the end of the elbow joint on the 3/4" pvc pipe and it stays put and works great for me. Just pop the trap down in front of the pipe and stake it off. The great thing about this set is that you can put it anywhere there is some water. I caught many coons this year in mud holes on the sides of roads. They do work great.

You can get the video from Dakotline. It is called Pipe trapping for coon and Mink. It is pretty simple, probably simpler if you watch the video. There are basically two types of pipe sets on the video. One is a 3 inch pvc pipe cut into about 12 inch lengths. You hammer one end into a creek bank, etc. push some bait in the back and set a trap in front. The second and by far the most effective for me is the 3/4 inch pvc pipe. You cut lengths about 18 inches long, push on a 3/4 inch elbow. Load the elbow with bait (I use my own pipe paste) and push it into the water, leaving about 8 inches of the pipe above the water level. Place your trap in front of the pipe about 4-6 inches in front. The eye appeal of the white pipe in itself will attract the coon, but with the bait in the pipe, the coon will work the front of the pipe and get himself in a bad jam. The great thing about the 3/4 inch pipe sets is that you can set them in water from two inches deep to 10 inches deep. Heavy rains will not affect this set, unless you put in in or near a creek. It is extremely effective.

It's interesting the variety of trapping video's out on the market. I get the idea watching some of them, they are just interested in selling a video and careless about the content.

I wonder if you could get away with a "T" instead of an elbow and stake drowning slides in diferent directions for a double.

Its interesting to read about the 3/4-in white plastic pipe set. I've only used the 3 or 4-inch white plastic pipe shoved horizontally into the bank with either a 1 1/2 or #11 out front. Wow do they pull coon (and mink)!

Sounds like it might work. I just might try it out next season. There are many variations you can make with this set, but the bottom line is that they do pull in the coons.

I don't target coon, but I have caught a few with the PVC pipes. If he comes by it, he's just too nosy to not check it out. Especially if it smells like FISH

i am using a cheaper alternative. and the only possible downfall is that they dont catch their eye as good. anyway i just use those one foot paper towel rolls and stick em in the mud just like a pvc set. stick a little fish in the back and put a trap under and four inches out.

I was forced to buy a 10' length of 3/4" pvc to repair a frozen pipe. the bad thing is that I only needed about 3" for the repair. I will definitely make some of these rigs up to try next season. I will have to check out that video, Mark Stec (Dkotaline Snares)is a great guy and I seriously doubt that he would do anything just to make a buck.
