I have set some snares for beaver where they are coming up onto the bank and they keep on knocking the snares over and chewing behind the snares. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Are you using a 10-12 inch loop about one inch off the ground?

either your loops are too small or they are not placed properly.

try setting in the water with about 2/3 of the snare underwater and about 1/3 above water with about the same size loop as mentioned above. guide him and break up the snare outline. youll have him the next trip he makes.

Buzzard as in too small I meant way too small, or of course it could be another animal knocking them down. I guess I should have spent a little more time on that reply.

it may be a bad reply buzz but it works for me. he said it was beaver that was knockin the snares down. he didnt say it was coon although it could be. and yes it could be otter but if its beaver like i said it works for me. ps thats what im talking about too put in the water and change things.

Well this morning me and my cousin went back to check them and it was dark still and we walk right up to it and a beaver jumped in the water and the snare was knocked over then we went back at daylight which was like 1 hour later and it was knocked down again and I have no clue how they are doing it. How do you all support your snares? with wire or what? My loop is probably 10 inches and 1 to 2 inches off the ground too.

maybe you could set a foothold there, that way he is there the next time he comes to knock it over. just make sure your trap is blended in very well. Might be a snare shy beaver, I have never heard of one but there is a first time for everything.

ya like said earlier if the snare stands out to much like in the open the beaver is harly likely to squeze through it. The beaver might just look at it like grass or twig and wont be to worried about walking over it or pushing it down. Either place it in a beaver trail where there is tall grass or twigs or do like furslinger said and have it partially submerged. And if you do want to try something different like leg holds...

You should use a #3 and either make a scent mound, bed them on there trail, or my personal favorite put them in the water where they will be coming out of the run. Put a small stick in the water so that when they bump the stick they drop the foot down into the trap. Make sure you have it hooked up to a drowning wire and weight.
hope this helps.
