Haven't saw any planted yet. Too wet and pretty cold. Only thing in so far is a few hundred acres of cabbage around me. The next dry spell is go time.

Saw a few planters out today on the lighter soils near me. Possible 2 inches of rain coming and hail and T-storms so some are trying to get a head of that.

Came home from play practice tonight and tractor lights in the fields all over. There will be a long wait for many soils in our area when a lot of rain hits the clay.

This is the close driest the soil has ever been around me in the 47 years I have lived here. The last 3 days dry corn farmers (cash corn) have really planted a lot of corn and are yet today. Our large dairy farmers have planted very little corn as most of their corn is for silage and or HMSC or snaplage. They are using the dry conditions to haul more manure as the roads are not as limiting as they typically are in spring. This will save them hauling more in August and use it for the corn crop this year and next year. Many are using manure and a pop up for corn now, which saves money. With more silage and high moisture planting in early to mid May gets good yields here with many times better stand counts which helps tonnage in silage. Much of the alfalfa seedings are in now.

Indiana Corn, Soybean Planting Behind Five-Year Average Pace
by Eric Pfeiffer
April 22, 2024
Continued soil wetness last week meant limited fieldwork for farmers across the state. In USDA’s Monday Crop Progress report, Indiana corn and soybean planting progress is at 2%.

The five-year average pace for Indiana corn is 5% and for soybeans 3%.

At the national level, corn and soybean planting is ahead of the five-year average pace. Corn planting is 12% complete while soybeans are 8% complete.

For our neighbors to the west, planting progress is moving along at a nice clip. Illinois has 11% of their corn crop in the ground and 11% of their soybean crop too. Iowa has 13% of their corn planted and 8% of their soybeans.

Nathaniel Warenski, USDA NASS Indiana Statistician, says Indiana’s winter wheat crop conditions improved from last week, with 77 percent of the crop rated good to excellent. Winter wheat progress has been bolstered by the ample rainfall and warm temperatures, remaining ahead of the five-year average.

Planters started rolling hard around here on Monday. Had the tech and salesman out for 8 hours setting up new air seeder. Made it 17 acres and lost 1 hydraulic drive. Got that fixed made to 25 acres lost the scale. It would still work,so just kept planting. 2 bean planters running got 650 acres in. 1 corn planter running got 600 acres in. So we are third done on corn and 25 percent of beans in. Raining now won't get back to field before Wednesday I am guessing.

Maybe 50% . I live outside the corn belt so I have no idea. I did see a farmer spreading liquid dairy manure not sure exactly what is going to grow in the field.

A lot went in here this week, when it dries up I’d say the rest of the corn will be in, quite a few beans are in and now the guys who did beans before will go to corn to finish it and then beans.

The last week a lot of corn went in. A lot of manure got hauled too. Most of the acres left to plant are for silage and many don't worry too much about planting until after mid May. Yield losses are not much if at all until after about the 20th. Dairy farmers here are also planting a lot more BMR corn for silage as it cuts down on corn grain to feed and with our lake effect here they plant some longer day varieties so they can stretch out the harvest season which can help reduce machinerey needs to put up 35-40K acres of silage in just our county.

thats about what I am seeing , the field north of the air port in Brodhead already has about 3 inch tall corn.

might be as high as 70-75% in eastern Green and Rock , it is an interesting little micro climate here in South central WI east of the hills and west of any lake effect in the Rock Valley it is always about 2 weeks earlier than crops just an hour drives north.

looks like first cutting of hay will be in a couple weeks I saw a turkey run out of some and she was like a little submarine the head was the only thing above the alfalfa till she popped out of the hay.

there were a lot of fields that I saw them out spraying the overwinter rye grass or similar whatever they were using for a cover crop , it is all brown now and about a foot tall.
they were brilliantly green a couple weeks ago when I saw them out spraying
