We went stream fishin today and these were everywhere. At first I thought maybe they’re ramps but the leaves are too big and fat to be ramps….

Could be false hellebore. Hard to see enough detail to tell for sure.

Ah now after reading about skunk cabbage I think that’s correct. The odor gave it away. I just thought at the time that someone was nearby smoking something questionable.

Lol....
When I was a kid , there was tons of that stuff in the creek by my house. My brother and I , being little brats , we used to go into the patch with a big stick and beat the heck out of it just for fun. Mom didn't like the stink we created.....lol

Try the (lens) app. It has helped me with a lot of things.

This is a decent App, you take a pic with your phone and the App tells you what it is. Not 100%, but usually gets it right.

I've never been able to detect a bad, or skunky smell from skunk cabbage.

I only notice the odor when they are blooming. Around here eat them in the spring.

By the way, there is a decent market for skunk cabbage for herbal medicine and the seeds sell for around a dollar each to gardeners.

They don't seem to have much of a smell unless disturbed. Much like a real skunk! LOL

If I walk through them or step on one they have a decent skunky smell.

Eh...wot?
