If you can only give one tip to a new trapper what would it be ?
One thing I do is carry glycerin with me on the line. Nothing like when ya make a set and reach for a favorite lure and it is almost empty. You can put a little glycerin in the bottle, shake it well and get the last lovin drops from the bottle to get ya outta a bind.

you cant catch animals if they arent there, scout preseason and set the best areas... I would agree, you can have the best looking set, trap, and bait/lure but if it is in a poor location your sucess might be limited.....my advice; get very familer with the species you are trapping and know their travel, eating and loafing habits, once a person gets adept at locating and tracking there target species it will be much easier to trap that species.

I would have to say trap bedding even if a up and coming trapper has a good location they won't get'um if the trap bedding isn't soild and location is very important.
Next year $20 grinners, just wait you'll see!

Learning to properly bed a trap, on location, the proper distance from the attractor for the target animal is far more important than asking "what's the best lure I can use"? Everybody first starting out thinks the lure is the most important thing to trapping. Wrong!

Safety......... Here in Mississippi we have a 4 month deer season. Hunting & trapping season are at the same time, wear hunter orange all the time if you have a "walking" trapline.

THe main thing is learning WHERE to put your sets. To do this you must KNOW your target species and their habits and habitats.
Read all you can on trapping, books, magazines, websites, and NEVER think you know enough or all there is about trapping.
Many of the best trappers in the world will tell you they are still learning things every year that make them better!
Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure

Get permission. Nobody likes trespassers, not the owner, and not the guy that has permission and didn't know someone already trapped it on the sly.

make sure you have your I.D. on your traps and check your tag after a catch. coons can really tear a tag up. for some reason the dnr officer likes to see a clean tag.

Never under estimate the power of a possum, and always assume there's one lying in ambush if you have one in a trap! The travel in packs!

Understand the mechanics of how a specific set is supposed to work. Then it can be adapted to any situation.

Tied in with Wright Bros. comment:
Get yourself a platt book or platt map of the county (s) you'll be trapping. Then you'll know who EVERYBODY is in the county that owns land. Then start knocking on doors to get those permissions.
Platts are also great for laying out road lines for culvert trapping. You'll see where the creeks cross under roads, ect. Plan a good rout and you're golden. Just make sure culvert trapping is legal inthe areas you'll be trapping. Oftentimes ajacent landowneres will have legal rights to the middle of the road (including under it!). If that's the case you'll again know who to talk too.
