Anybody own one? I'd like to have one but have no idea what's good and what's junk.

I bought a bacman set from an auction for $50. We set it up around the wood stove at Christmas, kids loved it. I've noticed you can get the reasonably priced used as long as it's not Christmas season.

I have an O gauge layout.

Atlas & Lionel engines and rolling stock

Atlas century 21 Nickle track and switches

You have to figure out what gauge you want to model

There's a bunch of sizes...G ..O..S..HO...N...Z...T

And evah since the computer chip hit the train world ...the possibilities are endless

There's also have the pre- war Lionel stuff

And what they call ..Tin Plate ...from the 1920 and 1930's

Plenty of you tube videos...on making scenery...wiring..

Heck....you can even operate your trains and switches with your phone now

It can be as simple or sophisticated as you want it to be.

We all started with a simple loop...and just expanded.

Train shows really stimulate that part of the brain

Nah, depends on what you want. Like was said above, a Bachmann boxed set will get you a basic train and oval track layout. You can go from there.

I guess grown men playing with a train set is still better than playing golf.

I'm just gonna go hunting, fishing, trapping.....

I have a complete Lionel set from the 1960's. Not sure if it's worth anything.

I'd like a piece of track screwed down to a board complete with ballast and scenery and . . . . a figurine of a trapper complete with packbasket walking across the tracks with his head held high.

Good one Muskrat.

If I set mine again it will be near the ceiling
and out of its box.
Will need more track, and replacement trucks,
and drywall, and...

The old ones are worth $$ if buying,
if selling not so much.

I haven't plugged it in for many years but as far as I know everything works, it has the transformer and all the track along with some extras, like tunnels and things.

I still have my Lionel from when I was a kid, early 50's. Ran great last time I tried it. No, it ain't for sale.

As a kid, we had a Lionel 'O' gage that ran around the Xmas tree every year. I don't know why ... Dad worked for the railroad so that may have had something to do with it.

In college, the railroad club have a house on campus. 3 full rooms, 'HO' setup with forest and field landscapes, mountains, tunnels, depots, switch yards, and towns. An ever growing project, build on by students every year. It was a multi discipline project: civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. 10 trains where always running during open houses along with cars, rail crossings, traffic intersection with lights. Unfortunately the setup was taken down years after I graduated when the building was demolished for redevelopment.

The Railroad Museum is in Green Bay, WI although I have not been there. They run locomotives and cars around the grounds, under power, at times is my understanding.

Looks like trains are like reloading. You buy a locomotive, then start spending money!

I wonder what my mom and dad did with mine. Had it in early 50s. You could put a smoke pellet in the stack of the steam engine. My neighbor had the same set so we made one big track set up in an unused front room.

I don't have a train set. I would try to go modern and use diesel locomotives. Not trying to argue but those things move way more freight than the steam locomotives.

Nothing looks better on a model RR layout...than a Steam Train with all them moving Paahts

I'm another guy still has his train set from childhood. Mine's a Lionel O gauge from the late 50's early 60's, still have all the boxes (that's what we've always stored the cars in), Played with it quite a bit but still in great shape, one of those toys that I took special care with.
