This is interesting. Ive often wondered what the difference is between cow, horse, deer, prairie dog, beaver and so on livers.

I've used beaver liver for years as in some of the lures I build ......I rot them down until the putrid odor changes to a mellow musky odor

IM still curious if there is a difference in the critters livers. Or maybe its just a matter of availability?

I've sold rat livers to a lure maker.

There is a difference. I've clearly seen it while testing and comparing.

Probably about any liver would catch some animals especially when doctored up with secondary ingredients. But actual attraction varies a good amount from one species to the next just like the meat from one species to the next.

Quite possibly a difference within the same species sometimes but this is based off what a good friend that knows his stuff shared with me on what he saw while testing not my own finds.

Rabbit numbers are down here but used to go out in the spring early morning with a cooler and ice. Shoot a few cottontails. Put the meat on ice and catch channel cats on the livers. They REALLY like them. Never fooled with liver trapping but rabbit liver and catfish has convinced me they are not all the same.

I have been making baits and lures for a long time now and have tried all kinds of animal liver . Beef never worked real well for me , pork and duck live works about the best for me but then while I was putting up some beaver way not try beaver liver never heard of anyone trying it . So I tried it fresh , with a slight taint and one rotted down to a mush . Set out about 20 test sites on good Predator locations in the fall the one with the slight taint had really good results over a two years I was testing it out for use as a base

After this discussion, I will definitely experiment with some other types of liver. Especially beaver liver. Prairie dog also.
