What your preferred drowning rod length? Rookie question. Trapping a new spot. It's a bit of a reach for the 8' fiberglass rods to reach the deep water. Considering adding an extension to them. I'm thinking about using 1/2" copper pipe as a sleeve and bolting it onto to the bottoms. Not sure what final length I want.

Your idea has merit but I don't think a copper sleeve will be sufficient. Copper might be too soft and bend or break on you with a large beaver or otter. I think I would use a steel sleeve instead. If the water is deep enough, your trap doesn't have to go past the joint. Might consider using wire or cable to get the added length your looking for.

10ft is my preferred length but i have a lot of 8s and even a few 6's.

One thing to watch with adding an extension is whether or not your lock will slide continue past the join. Might be better off going old school.

I'll take that into consideration. I mentioned copper cause I know the the ID is 1/2". Not sure about steel. However the 2 - 4' that I add, most of that will be in the mud. I don't think it will matter. Guess I will find out. They are strong critters. Found that out already. Which length do you prefer? Can't use cable. I need the to keep the weight down. The less weight, the better. Otherwise the boat won't get on plane if your loaded up w/ beavers. Found that out already too. 7 total yesterday. 60 lb, 57lb, and 47lb. Long ride back to the ramp.

Never trapped out of a boat but with a kayak, gotta be good at distributing weight.

Good job on the beavers yesterday! I use 10' 1/2" rebar but only take 4-5 with me as I too trap from a boat. The rest of my traps are conibears or old fashioned cable and sash weights with MB750's.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

If I pay attention to weight, ,I can bring 10 fiberglass rods, 10- No BS Beaver Extremes, 10- 330's, supply's, 3 adults, 2 kids and get up on plane. The problem is when you get loaded up w/ beavers on the return trip.
We are right at the limit of where the motor has enough power to get on plane. Every extra pound hurts. Guess I'm gonna have to get a bigger boat! LOL Grand kids are having fun so not taking them is not an option.

I think what I'm going to do is sleeve some 1'2 schedule 80 PVC onto the bottom. Not sure about the exact ID but I can drill it out if it doesn't fit. Then heat it up and slide it on. Epoxy them on. I'll make a couple to test it out. If it works then I'll make up 6-10'rs.

With all the helpers along you could have them skinning and leave the carcasses for the critters to eat-problem solved.

Over 10’ I’d suggest using cable

Using cable or wire, just cut you a long wood stake on site to stake the deep end, no need to pack weights. Or if you are in rocky bottoms (doesn't sound like you are) carry some gunny sacks and fill them with rocks on site, to use as your weights.

I know nothing about hauling around long steel rods but my deepwater stakes are cut on site whatever length is needed.
9 foot 1 inch tamarack takes care of most with enough to stake the top end if you want.1 stake good for 2 or 3 slides.

I'm running 8' for now but there are times a 10' old work better. Trapping from my truck so weight and length isn't an issue. Water is so low right now that it's hard to find water deep enough so using bodygrips for now.

I like how you think outside the box. LOL However the carcasses have to make the trip back to the ramp. They are going to one of my best clients. He's a big wolf trapper and wants every beaver carcass I can get for him. I had to buy a chest freezer just for him. I even wrote it off as "client relations"!

Most of my water an 8' is just right, 10' would be too much. Mostly ditch creeks with one good hole at the dam barely deep enough to get it done.

I only use 8’ and don’t recall it ever being an issue.

I always made mine 8' long because rebar came in 20' sections so I could make two rods and two 24" stakes to anchor the top of each rod. But If I were the OP, I think I'd use cable or wire to save weight on the plane and not even bother with the rods. 1/8" 7x19 cable makes wonderful drowner cable that is less prone to kinking than 7x7, that is most commonly used, for a longer life of the drowner.

If weight were a concern cable and sand bag would be the way to go.
