At the end of the day competition is a good thing.

It makes people step up to the plate.

For the first time in their history Fha actual gave out sales reports in a timely fashion.

If GFW moving into Ontario and buying fur and castor gets Fha moving the trappers win.

I am having a hard time keeping up to the calls I am getting from trappers wanting to sell to GFW

Ontario is a big place and has the potential to produce a lot of fur.

I have nothing clever to put here.

For the third time I ask. How many bobcats were held over?

Fur Harvesters = a Canadian company that mostly panders to northern trappers. Trappers' fur from most of continental US is not even wanted on those auctions. If they did, they'd have agents in our areas.

That memo was put out because GFW is cutting into the numbers of Canadian beavers that FH would like to get their hands on now that there is a strong demand.

Competition is a VERY good thing!!!

GFW had two fur buyers in Northern/central Ontario buying green beavers. The price they where paying was enough for a lot of trappers to look at the time saved vs potential at auction and sell. They where doing it on a trial bases, not sure if they will continue with buying green beaver or not next year. I do know a lot of trappers where asking if they would be moving south in Ontario on buying runs next year. Seems they have room to expand on the green beaver front anyways in Ontario.

FHA has to be a concerned about it because GFW is offering a service that they cannot, buying green beaver.

I am sure they are concerned about GFW moving into Quebec as well.

From what I understand GFW then shipped them south for processing. The question is how much overhead can GFW take in the shipment, processing and fees of buying beavers in Ontario and shipping them, well still offering a competitive price point.

So all this is from a narrow band of central/northern Ontario, GFW has lots of room to expand in the green beaver market in Canada.

For FHA this is supposedly there bread and butter species, I know I would be concerned about it. They are not just competing on price vs price, but price vs price and time, with a company offering a service they do not.

If GFW put out a chart to counter FHA it could be exactly that. Price per finished pelt vs price per green pelt, with the time saved.

On a completely different note, really wish another auction house would try to get into the international market for North America. Maybe 4-5 State Associations trial a combined auction, try to setup it up 2-3 years from now. Maybe the NTA try's something......

FHA sold a pile of my beaver for $3 a few years back. Wasn't a $3 beaver in the pile. Lesson Learned.

Everything goes to Wiebke now...Everything. If I wasn't close enough to drive to him, I'd just ship them there.

To each his own.

They have a long way to go to pick up the numbers that NAFA got in Ontario as competition for FHA,
And after this sale will have to up their offers a good bit to do so,Which I bet they will same as they did last year following FHA sale.
They will keep playing catch up as long as the international buyers filling the auction room continue to raise the market going forward now.

I'd bet there are many more beaver trappers that DO NOT put up their beaver than those that do put em up.....especially with the recent up-surge in the prices.

There will be plenty of frozen beavs for GFW to purchase in the frozen North.

FH must be concerned.

Certainly appeals to people who do not have time and/or know how to do proper put up. Looks like GFW got FHA's attention. Competition good.

How many people got $54- $58 USD. from the Canadian Rat Wagon? That's what the better winter shearing beaver brought. I paid that for some. And the good winter ( January, February, March) beaver will be on the next sale, so they should bring more, if the market holds.

But, and that's a big but. The beavers you sent to FHA were the ones you caught earlier in the fall. You forgot to throw that into the equation.

Where there has not traditionally been green beaver buyers everybody had to learn to put them up or find someone else that would. Would assume that applies to most if not all of Canada and the western US.

I do not know any of the regs regarding raw or green fur crossing the USA/Canada border. Don't know how much it costs to drive from northern ILL,travel through Ont. buy green fur, transport, back, finish and then market. The cost buyers pay at FHA may not be excessive when compared to having to finish and transport. the other advantage is put up fur can reach markets quicker if needed.

FHA is a good option. However, I posted on here awhile ago that beaver from this section would average mid to upper 20s at FHA. The trapper from up north posted on this thread he averaged $29 on 70 beaver. Unless the market increases substantially then I think that’s ballpark where most trappers will average on a sizeable trapper run collection. I process all my beaver (don’t float any) and the size/quality is all over the board. Not enough shearable beaver without damage in this section to see a high average. Not long ago it was tough to get more than a $10-12 average.
