It was almost as if AIDS wasn't something that needed to be cured when it was killing gays, intravenous drug users, prostitutes and perverts. The desire to save a popular, wealthy, national sports hero seemed to speed up the finding of a cure.

I don't think Johnson ever had "AIDS" but was diagnosed as HIV positive before it developed into AIDS. He had the financial resources to get the newest drugs and was able to keep from developing AIDS. Arthur Ashe was not so lucky.
