So I got some #3 victor and Blake's off the trap shed. I have never used LS and wanted to try some especially since I read they won't freeze down. Upon playing with them I started to to think hmmm I bet these will be about as hard to get out of one handed as when I got in a 220. I have yet to get into one but I know when I use them it will be coming. They sure seem like they will be harder to get out of than a coil spring and maybe more to get the catch out of as well.

So am I correct and how is the bed way to get out of them. Easiest way I found to set is break over my leg. Before I tried that I thought they would be hard to set. Now it's easy.

NO ACTUALLY IT'S EASIER TO GET OUT OF A DLS !
Easier to set also, and comes in handy on a pond or river bank.
Land trapping is different.
Just a little more work to cover them.

I still say double long springs are demonized. Caught my fingers in an overwaxed 11 and it was a big difference than a coilspring. Absolute panic ensued

LOL

Still easier to get out of than a coil spring or a body grip.

Trap setters. I think we them on #3 and # 4 Newhouse and 3 &1/2 LPCs Basically. 2 prices of 14 inch rod. Welded to 2 lengths or chain. Bottom has = hole through it where loop cable goes. Can dig them out in morning if you want to see and copy. And build you a set?

I always just opened them over my knee!
If caught in one , found solid ground, and stood on the springs to open the jaws.
Heck of a lot easier than a coil spring ( though easier than a body grip) !

P F, Your first impression of Double Long Springs is Correct! So be careful with the larger DLS.

I cut my teeth on long springs for coyotes and used them for better part of forty years. #2s and #3s.
I have a bunch in my inventory and have no plans to get rid of them. Too hard to get more and I like to get them out from time to time. I do love my Bridger #2 coils now, but seriously I do set longs too for some reason cannot let them go and something cool about breaking them open over my knee to set them.
I had an easy time turning some catches loose from longs. Probably more so than I do with coils too. Technique more than anything. I don’t have the finger strength I used to to squeeze open stiff coil levers when facing away from me on a release, but mashing longs open seems easier might be mechanics too but seems easier.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I'll bet that hurts when you hit the end of the chain.

I don't use doubles much and not big ones , but I went and found one in the shed

thinking
I bet a clamp would work on the springs fairly well

so I jammed my hand in one with a glove on of course because why not.

yup you can squeeze down the springs fairly well when the tension is off your fingers come out

I love using 3N’s for cats. Only problem I have is it’s hard to release small cats or anything else. Coils much easier to do.

Plant your heels push down remove what you need to remove. Set them on you knee like you want to break them in half hook the upper spring loop under the curve of the jaws, get control of the jaws set dog and pan clear hand while holding the pan pressure upwards.
