I wonder where the best source is for a landowner to buy seeds

I agree not to get carried away. There's a time & place for them. They'll grow in really bad soil. I have 1 area where a dozer took a lot of soil from to build up the approach area on my access trail near where it meets the township road. Nothing but weeds have been growing in that sand patch since, but last year I started noticing a few jackpine. Last year I gathered these seeds. Unlike how WDNR sells the seeds, my seeds are still inside the wings. They sat on my truck dash last summer. I removed the wings this week from the cones. I'm thinking it will work if I plant these:

Here's how DNR sells them:

I just order 5000 noble fir seedling. They started working with the seeds in December. I'm not sure what the process is but it is a little technical, but probably not to difficult to learn the process.

You'll have much better luck planting seedlings imo.

The seeds they selected come from the same elevation as our site, and the same seed zone.

My problem with seedlings in such sand though is that they'd probably require extensive irrigation &/or some added black dirt to get them established.

We plan to plant our noble fir seedlings next November just before winter snow, that way there will be plenty of moisture surrounding the rootlets when they come out of dormancy in the spring. Supposedly this will help them get a better start. I think that would result in better success than starting with seeds. Moisture will be a concern either way. Not sure of your conditions there, our site is usually wet winters and springs, then dry mid summer to early fall.

Fall planting might work for me. I thought you were talking about spring. It seems like our nurseries focus on spring shipments but I wouldn't rule out fall planting. Thanks
Ps. We don't have noble fir around here

My local DNR forester gave me what seems like some good advice for planting the seeds. I have the seeds & will give it a try. That said, I surely won't rule out seedlings in the future.
