Nunyacreek OP trapper N Joined: Aug 2020 Posts: 55 MT	I just watched Werner Herzog’s movie “the happy people” and can’t recommend it enough. Super interesting profile of trappers in the Russian taiga trapping marten (sable) and loving semi-subsistence lifestyle. Anyone who checks marten deadfalls on a Russian sno-go is tough. Many of these guys seem to have been “assigned” trapping as a lifestyle during the communist era and appear to have embraced it compared to life ona collective farm or whatever other “opportunity” they had.this one old guy had this to say: “ I have tried all sorts of jobs here on the collective farm. But hunting is the best - just the ticket. Nobody tells me what to do, I can hunt or rest. I am my own man, and hunting is great fun.” Trapper from Bahktia, Russia I thought he summed it up pretty well.

Osagan trapper O Joined: Sep 2020 Posts: 1,001 Missouri	Good documentary. I was impressed with the main guy's (Genady?) skill with an ax. I've never seen an ax like that for sale here. It looked like a handy size About the size of a boys ax bit with a larger flat cutting edge.

Nunyacreek OP trapper N Joined: Aug 2020 Posts: 55 MT	Kosoi - I watched and tried to figure out whether the movie actually mentioned his name so I could attribute it - but I could not understand. When he refers to a “collective” is he referring to a collective farm or the village in general? The one guy said he was assigned to trap and dropped by helicopter, but clearly has family ties in the village now. I assume at least some of the folks have lived in that village for generations and trapped, but it was hard to understand. Any light you can shed would be great!
