Ok so I have been as basic as it gets with bait. Just cutting off some beaver, ground hog, or mice ECT and putting it down a hole.

90% of my k 9 is dirt hole and pro choice lure with some fox p. Works well enough to make me happy. My limited beaver trapping is snares on trails and caster mounds with Backbreaker. Again workes very well. Love Backbreaker.

But I got brave enough to extract skunk essence, have a few caster glands and would like to read up on basic lure making, gland harvesting, and preservation. I toss a lot of meat that I could turn into bait from some catches. I'm limited on time at home now but want to get educated on the process so when I do get time I can try to get more involved than tossing some meat from a catch down a hole .

It would be nice to use more of the things I discard in the future. Now I'm thinking about bait for k 9s and glands and such to add to it harvest to sell ECT. I don't need a beaver lure Paul has me covered on that, but I do want to use more of our catches.

Been reading all the questions here and picking up some things but since I'm starting with zero knowledge I'm missing a lot.

Is there a basic 101 post or series of them anyone can point me to. And or good books to buy?

Edit; I guess a good coon bait may be fun to make also since my boy really seems to like targeting them. ( May be a volume thing) yes anything works for them so a k 9 bait sould be fine there also.
Anyway. I guess I'm just toying with the idea of of using things I toss out and making things with the boys.

Looking down the forms further and I see the bait archives

Sounds like I should just chunk whatever meat I run across mix in some boss man's bait solution let it sit and shove it down holes next year. I guess I could try getting more involved and add caster or some skink juice but need to do some more reading yet.

Still not sure what the bare solution is other than preserving agents. More reading to do for sure.

If I was to do it over again I'd buy just one book (Russ Carmen's)to get a rough idea how to get started. The rest is just trial and error and learning on your own. Be warned it's another hobby that can get consuming of both time and money so if u don't have time for another hobby I wouldn't go down that rabbit hole.

Thanks guys. And yes sir I am very limited on time wes at home 15hrs this week got a good load and half of wood cut after getting off at 7am from 16hr night shift and driving 2.5 hrs home. Took a nap and left to go back to work at 1am. But hopefully in the next year I will be cutting back some and.have time at least a little more than now. Looks like I can buy some books and DVDs and get educated ahead of time. Thanks again.

I have a gallon of deer heart/liver/lungs/trimming that I used Les Federales bait solution, another gallon of chunked squirrel that I used Dunlop bait solution. And just ordered 3 of the Dobbins bait solution to add to a couple gallons of bobcat, one chunked and one ground. The other will be added to a gallon of ground beaver. These I plan on testing later and hopefully have a couple winners for next season.

Russ Carman's book is probably the best for you, and an easy read. Nick Wysinskis are also good. Read them both and you will notice they disagree on some pretty basic things, like what certain ingredients actually are and where they come from. Also what certain ingredients are good for. So like Yes Sir said, you will have to experiment and decide what works for you, but they will get you started.
