Has anyone else noticed an increase in gray fox this year? I have caught more than normal. Pretty cool.

Down here in the southern Sacramentos area of the state they still haven't recovered from the distemper outbreak two years ago. Drought hasn't helped either.

Not in Georgia. Here they have almost disappeared. Started noticing about 6 or 7 years back. Now it is rare to even see a track anywhere down here.

I used to catch well over 100 every season...a few years right at 200. Won't do that now....not even close.

They have really expanded in western Oregon. On the California border you could catch hundreds with little effort.

My grandson who is in his second year of college ( wants to be a game warden) helped a wildlife biologist look for grey fox in extreme southern Illinois. The consensus was that grey fox were completely missing from the area. They determined that their was a small population only in the largest river bottoms of the area.
Here in my area the gray fox has not been seen since the early 1980’s, just a couple years after we saw our first coyotes.

I have been working the coyotes over the last few years on my property (10 off of 38ac last year) and I have seen a few on the game cameras. Have been here 30 years and had only seen 1 fox before last year and it was a red.

10 years ago, we could call in 5-6 grays on a bad night of predator hunting. Can't hardly find one over the last couple of years. I caught my first this year and couldn't hardly believe it. Hadn't seen a drop of sign or had one on camera in the 5 years that I've owned the place.

So rare in my neck of the woods I'd let one go if I caught it. Used to have lots. Reds and yotes are doing well

It’s pretty crazy to hear about the condition of the gray fox across all the different states. They are a pretty cool animal and a lot of fun to catch. I wish they were worth more. For some reason here in the north west corner of New Mexico they are doing well. Along with catching a respectable amount I have had quite a few misses throughout this season and continue to see tracks and fresh sign every where I look. I hope they can continue to do well.

May God bless you and yours

Well I had to pull my traps today and I ended everything with one more gray fox. I saw at least six sets of new tracks.

Nice fox, I sure miss seeing gray fox, hardly any left around here and only a few reds. Coyotes have taken over.

Awesome catches and 1 in a new house. I think those little greys are cool animals.

You think that trap is big enough to hold him?

My buddy from college was from Dunkirk and used to plle up the Grey fox
while trapping in Chatauqua & Cattaraugus Counties trapping the grape vineyards.

He caught better than 50% greys over red fox in the late 1970's- early 1980's.

He became a game warden/Encon officer out that way (Kevin Budniewski)

Do you know him ?
