Just wondering if anyone has experience transplanting Giant Cane? I have several big stands that grow along the creek below my house and am wanting to move some up to my house as a privacy screen and to have my own personal stock right outside my door. Plus, I just like giant cane in general from all the nostalgia of making cane poles as a kid. I'm aware that cane can end up growing out of control, but this is something I am not concerned with.

Today I cut out about a 3'x1' section of roots and planted it in my desired spot of well drained soil on a slope along a retaining wall. What I cut out was a section of about 4-5 main roots (rhizomes?) 3' long with a bunch of small secondary roots coming off the mains..just wondering if this is the correct way to do it?

I plan on getting some more root sections the next time I have a day off, but wanted to see if anyone had any advice in the meantime.

Native arundia cane or something else?

IMO the non native should be eradicated with criminal penalty for the propagation of it. But until you have to battle the nasty stuff you wouldn't understand.

I used to live in far western Ky and there were areas with good sized stands of native Arundinaria gigantea in that region. After seeing how deer used it for bedding cover on a friend's property, I transplanted some to a location near a creek on a piece of farm ground I owned. It survived the transplant and grew but did not spread with any great speed.

It's a very invasive plant. Don't plant it near your property line, neighbors may not want it in their yard. It takes over everything.

This is Native giant cane, not any invasive type of bamboo. I have no neighbors or property lines to worry about. I am not worried in the slightest of it getting out of hand. I am just seeking tips on successfully cutting out of an established cane break and getting it to grow on my actual property.

I just dug it up getting a good shovel or 2 full of soil with the roots and several canes. It was tossed in garbage bags and planted a few days later. Did not have to do anything special. Like you said, this is not a plant that will spread and take over like the invasive Asian bamboo If it was, Kentucky would be covered with it.
