Curious what others do with lures that haven't been used up during your trapping season? Do you freeze them? Just refrigerate them? Or just put on a shelf in your trap shed?
Made about 3 pounds of bait/lures for bobcats and want to preserve it for use next year but not sure whether to freeze it/ refrigerate it or just store it of the shelf.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies

I normally just store in a shelf like above. Have a small fridge from my son’s dorm I’m gonna use this year. For your homemade bait, if it has preservatives it should be ok otherwise you will want to freeze it

I keep mine in an old cooler in the basement. Is it necessary ? How good is your preservative ? I’ve got a buddy that keeps his in the freezer and has done so for years with good results. I don’t have enough room in the freezer.

Ground it up let it ferment about 2 weeks added 4 to 5 Oz of Sodium Benzoate and have it currently stored in empty 1 lb powder containers.( gotta love those Hodgeden containers) With the exception of 1 using lids are taped.
Was just kinds wondering if I needed to freeze it instead of just being in a fridge of if I was wasting fridge space

I confiscated my parents old fridge when they upgraded and moved it into the trap shed, store all my lures and baits there in the off season, plus have the top freezer for bait that I have yet to grind or make

I've found that glad type lures seem to keep well, some even get "better" to my nose at least.

Call lures with skunk or other loud stuff lose a lot of their zip after you open them and store them. I usually chuck the call stuff and buy fresh the next season.

Baits seem to keep well if preserved right. Which most reputable brands are.

Store mine in ammo cans in a cool area or a fridge.

If I send my address will you send me all that old call lure? It's easy to spike back up...

grin Easier to grab a few bottles of fresh stuff. Supports lure makers and I don't have to deal in pure quill, having the loud stuff in the shed year round and re-inventing the wheel. My week long winter line here in MI is the only time I use the loud stuff so not a major financial hit for a few jars of call every year.

Same goes for baits. Momma says no festering pails of stuff allowed. Buy it as needed.

Caps and lids go on them back in the cool basement they go. Been doing this for decades and all is good. If you worried about smells put them in a five gallon pail with a tight fitting lid

My homemade baits i use preservative with them and they do fine from year to year they stay out in a cabinet in my garage. My coyote gland lures, gusto and such I put them all in a large vacuum food bag and seal them up.
