Thank you for that Boone! I used to get real frustrated when I started trapping and would have my trap back 9" and offset and would see tracks where a coyote worked the hole and never got near the trap. When I started playing with trail cameras I realized there is no such thing as too close. I would rather miss the ones that are shy and stay back with minimal foot movement instead of missing the ones that work the set with everything they have (and still miss half the ones that stay back).

Is it possible that your red marked holes noted on pictures are off? With camera in picture sequence vs video it’s a slight guessing game how exactly that critter made it to his location in second picture——But his nose is a long ways from where you indicated the hole to be. Id image he came from left over the smells and maybe his nose stopped at both those spots on way. But still makes me wonder why he’s sniffing way to the right so intently. Perhaps dropped a touch of lure there?

Critter came close enough and you got lots of advice on switching things up so that can catch it. But one other thing that would pop into my mind in this case—- why didn’t that critter do anything besides walk past and sniff?

The red hole on the left I think is to the left a bit at that darker spot about 3-4 inches away. But I don't know what the coyote is sniffing in the 2nd pic.

Was scrolling thru those pics again and it got me to wondering. Is it possible that a Duke #2 dogless trap wouldn't fire on if a coyote stepped on it if I didn't push the pan down to the designated notch?

No experience with that trap but any of them can fail to fire if there is too much tension, etc. In that last picture, assuming your marks on the trap location is correct, I thought his hind foot is close to trap. But you can be so close yet it still doesnt happen on some days. Just the way it happens

Update: So I had to pull traps last weekend (family vacation) and just got around to setting them today. I remade the entire set basically and am planning on seeing what the coyote does with this new set. Then I am gonna place another trap at the set.

Update: A coyote ran past my set today. Barely stopped and looked at but passed on. I think it'll come around before the end of trapping season.(Feb. 29 unless on private land which is until April 15)

Honestly from watching coyotes at test sets I've come to the conclusion the best chance to get the coyote to work the set is the first time they encounter it. The exception is in the first 1-4 days when the smell of human scent can still be at an uncomfortable level for them. Seems typically every later visit they have less intrest.

End of regular season and I pulled everything and no more coyotes have came by that trap so a "good/bad" sign.
