It's always nice to walk in and have a new baby in the barn. As usual the new first time mom was not moved to the stalla made for that. So the baby is out with several goats running around and a first time mom. So when moved mom is checking out the area and not liking being away from the heard. She is running away fome the baby trying to nurse. So that leaves us holding her and hopefully she accepts it and we don't end up bottle feeding like we did with a first time mom last year..

I'm for culling if they are poor moms the first go around but my wife insist on giving them a 2nd chance. I say send them down the road. But this one is on the wife for not having her in the stall a getting used to it beforehand and away from the rest of the heard. At least that will be my excuse for her. Going to be a long cool night watching to see if mom is a mom or not. Think I may have saw another hoof poke out for a second thought a single was odd but first time mom who knows all she is interested in is the hay

Nice little guy there, do you dock their tails like a sheep?

No docking the tails but do have to disbud then if they are going to be shown to breed standard. But if not done well you get scurs.

First timers are always a crapshoot. I have 20 that i am dealing with this season. I had one that didn't want the second lamb of a set of twins, and one that had one with a rye neck and couldnt nurse but she still takes care of it (other than feeding).

I have 2 more to go full sisters also first timers full sisters to this one. We also should have two more with experience but one that didn't take care of it's first drop around May . The plan is to go up every 2 to 4 hrs and hold mom to let the baby feed . We have a friend that said normally within 3 days the mom accepts them. Normally before the first day we just milk the mom and bottle feed the babys. Often we plan on bottle feeding them after the first few weeks anyway. Other times we let mom keep them when we get lazy. But they are milk goats so will be getting milked.

I bet the wife didn't buy a new milk machine yet either. Han milking one or two is not bad but 3 or more and I start to look like Popeye. Good reason to get back to working ot. Lol.

Wife got up and made sure baby got to eat all night. Mom was not running from the baby as hard this morning but still not doing what I want to see. So will be an every 2 to 4 hours thing until she does or the wife decides it's easier to milk mom 2x a day and brings the baby down to the house so she doesn't have to keep driving up to the barn.

We are about 2/3rds through our Katahdin ewes lambing. We have 24 lambs. Amazing how hardy those little lambs are. Most of our first lambing ewe lambs have only 1 lamb. This year more are having twins and they are doing quite well. We opted this season to lamb about 6 weeks earlier to hit the better markets for holidays and so far it is going well.
