I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried to make a muskrat lure that can be squirted out of a squirt bottle like a guy would use for fish oil and such. Is it possible with an already made lure or does it have to be done entirely from scratch?

Due to the conditions under which a rat lure is used, a paste or grease type consistency is a better choice. This would allow a stick and dip application, specific placement of the lure and would provide a more long-lasting product. A good paste lure will take high water and when the water recedes the lure would still be there if flood water/debris didn't carry it away.

I always wanted to make a rat gland tincture with a syrup consistency and use it on rat floats. My area doesn’t lend itself to float trapping but considering you live in the Dakotas, it might be worth a try to you.

When I very first started trapping, I used cherry flavored apple cider. I used it in a spray bottle and it worked good. But I agree with what Bob said about the paste and pin pointing the location of youre lure placement. Good luck!

That was why I was asking because it would be quicker to give a float a quick squirt than take the jar out, take the lid off, find a stick, etc. all while doing so with gauntlets on that are too big.

When you set your float up just pre lure it. Done deal. Good lure on a lure holder won't need re applicated after a catch if you lure it well the first time.

Glycerin and poplar bud oil in a flip top squirt bottle

Tried it at my beaver sets before and caught a lot of muskrats
