Nothing like fog. There's been times on the river I couldn't tell which way was up the fog was so thick. Take away sun, moon and stars with no sense of cardinal direction and its totally disorienting. I'd rather be in total darkness than fog. Fog even muffles echoes you might could use.

What I dread as much is in the fall when the air gets colder than the water is the fog/ steam coming off the water sits on top of the water for the first couple feet, and you can't see the water.
