Brother been running some traps using fresh liver for two weeks with no takers. Been below freezing and thinking fresh liver frozen must not put off much odder. Should liver start rotting before use?

Wouldn't worry about the odor so much as where your are putting the sets .

Don’t put those traps near the new tracks, put them ( on ) the new tracks you found. I can’t stress enough that this is what everyone means when they say set ON sign .

Fresh liver works good on reds here. I think they get use to deer from all the gut piles they run across

Liver, lung, heart kidney lopped up into inch chunks fresh or a little tainted is the best bait I've used... Everything is all about exact location though..

Don’t feel bad, deer liver didn’t work for me either, but fresh cut chunks off a caught bobcat did, lol. We have some weird critters here. Seen deer and hogs rot on the carcass.

Liver has been a dud for me here in the last week or two as well. Sets on location and placed right under tracks and combined with good urine. This has been a weird year for predators for me here though. Maybe I just suck

You southern guys...do you think its because the coyotes dont need to scavenge as much down there or do you think they just dont care for it?

Sniper, I used Swampwolfs liver/stomach mixture last year and had good luck with it. Im not sure what causes them to hit stuff sometimes and ignore it at other times here. I believe Wannabe and I have had similar experiences where several deer carcasses in a row may be eaten in a night and then another one is thrown out and mummifies right where you put it. Buzzards and predators all ignore it. Happened this year to me where deer and pig carcasses were being hit. I dumped a couple more deer and 6-7 beavers and they all rotted right where I put them. If I find a rhyme or reason to it I will let you know, but until then I just scratch my head.

There's 5 reasons why a animal comes to a scent, they want to:

Eat it
Fight it
Breed it
Wear it
Or curiosity.

Your fresh smelling baits they'll generally want to eat if your yotes have full bellies, they probably won't be good interested. Fouled smelling baits like that stomach bait, they'll try to wear it. I think the wear it responses are more universal attractants that work all year. Food responses are more fickle unless you get into areas with hard winters.

I don’t know how many times over the years I’ve caught a coyote with a food lure and that dude was packing his lunch.

Deer liver flat out works for me with both coyotes and cats, especially in step-down dirtholes. Deer liver puts off a "iodine" smell that is unmistakable to a predator.

I will say that I cut it in 3" chunks and use several pieces in the hole and had the best luck...

Or urinate on it.

I use an old blender to get fresh liver as close to liquid as possible
I did add some glycerin to make it a little more runny and keep it from freezing.
I like it and so do the k-9s

Interesting. I found when I liquified liver with a blender it seemed to lose that unique smell. But if it works for you then it it's the right stuff.

I should add, after Christmas I put a little gland lure in it.
Less glycerin early in the season

How much of this liver smoothie do you use at a set? Sounds like a slick way to use it compared to chunks and they can't steel it either.
