Leaving early Friday morning and working 12 hours shifts through Thursday, today is the day to load the gear in the truck. I was planning on both kids joining me for 14 days but the youngest doesn't want to miss her basketball games and the oldest has events that only allow us to be gone for a weekish. Plan on setting for 6 days and pull on the 7th. This will be our 3rd trip down with more property every year. Looking forward to warmer temps and time with my oldest. Always super friendly people and we might try to sneak in a barrel race for my kid on a friends horse. Hope to find some cats and odd colored skunks again.

Maybe by the end of the week the temps will be back up

20deg here now and not supposed to get above freezing for about the next 72 hours

And I am 100+ miles south of the Red laugh

Forecast is calling for temps in the 50s. I had buckets of waxed sand brought down over the summer. Regardless of weather, we will give it a good effort, eat well, and enjoy another adventure.

Well, 10 degrees this morning and the red clay is about the most miserable stuff I have ever tried to chip a trap bed out of. We stayed at it from daylight until dark. Pretty sure we will have some success tomorrow. Supposedly going to have a ice storm roll through, then a few days of rain. This will definitely be our most challenging trip but we didn't drive over a thousand miles to sit in the hotel. Will definitely be making memories

2nd day, 9 coons and 3 skunks. Still battling frozen clay and a ice storm for tonight. We managed to get more sets in and had a all time best, 40 cc of essence from one skunk. 👌

Ice storm was no joke, spent the whole day in 4 wheel drive. Every set was iced over. We managed to get a few coon and 1 coyote. Slammed in some more sets until we ran out of waxed sand. Ran back to town and picked up some sand and a new weapon to fight the frozen clay. Rain forecasted for the next few days. Well be after it daylight until dark until we're out of traps. Alright now. That'll certainly help chip through and make a bed. Way to stick to it. That one skunk sure was nice and what a load of essence. Good luck the next couple days

42 degrees and rain today, a lot of sets under water with the frost still a few inches thick. Managed 4 coon and 2 coyotes and missed a few I assume because the trap beds are no longer solid as the clay chips thaw under them. More sets going in daily and found a pond with some beaver sign so we sunk a few 330s in the runs we could find. Never thought we would be under ice trapping down here. 3 inches of clear ice. Every day is dumber than the last. Sloppy wet red dirt is miserable to do anything in. We walked in to alot of the sets and pulled a handful definitely not going to be drivable anytime soon. Caught 3 beaver, 12 coon, 2 possum, and a skunk. Humbled by the number of misses we had. I know it's from sloppy bedding, did the best we could with the clay chips we had at the time. We for sure missed 2 bobcats and 4 coyotes. I remade as best as I could, the local dirt seeps through the sifter which is difficult to try to get a set to look decent. Amazing how many places that clay ends up, truck is trashed inside and out. It's like neversieze [Linked Image]

Long day remaking sets, only a handful left under water. 48 degrees with no rain or wind. First comfortable day of this trip. 6 coyotes, 6 coon, and 3 possum. Was hoping for more skunks and a few cats for this trip but happy with today's catch given the weather we have had. Pretty sure we cleaned out the beaver from the small pond but we will leave the traps in place to make sure. If it doesn't rain anymore we should finish our last few days with decent numbers. Not much to show for our efforts today. 1 coyote and 3 coon. Rained last night and they are calling for rain all day today and tonight. Majority of sets look like puddles. [Linked Image]

I spent a couple years southwest of you in Lawton. The weather is no joke in OK and the red dirt has it's own challenges. Sure wish snares were legal there!

Keep at it, sounds like you're having a great time with your daughter.

We are having fun. It's all the little things unique to this part of the country. One ranch had a bull bust a 6 wire fence to go fight with the neighbors bull this morning and we were first on scene, used the Tacoma like a cutting horse and got him back across the road before the owner showed up. Spent the next hour mending fence and pushing cows to another pasture. Pain in the neck for the owner but fun for us. Yesterday we put the sneak on a armadillo, kid got it on video. Another land owner also has exotics so we learned some of the ins and outs of breeding and auctions. Seen and dealt with a lot of feral dogs. Found a couple boar skulls and some shed antlers. Our eyes are peeled as we're driving around because we never know what is next. [Linked Image]

Got lazy and only put 1 set here. Wish I would have had a couple more, looks like at least 3 others paid this one a visit. I would have blamed wolves if I was home and couldn't see tracks. [Linked Image]

Pull day today. 26 degrees this morning and all wet sets were frozen solid. We had a 20 year old guy that wants to trap ride with us for the day, he had a ton of questions. We will shower up and go to dinner with one of the landowners then catch a few hours of sleep and head north. 1057 miles and we should be home by 7 or 8 tomorrow night. We gave it a good go and learned a lot. Kid is already excited for next year. First time we seen the sun since we got here was today, go figure. [Linked Image]

I enjoyed all the posts. I'm starting my annual Oklahoma line this weekend. Looks like rain all weekend when I'm starting so we will see how it goes. At least it is going to be warm all week. Usually we get a big rain and then get freeze/thaw conditions every day.

Good luck to you. I spent the day power washing traps, hopefully will finish tomorrow. I have a new found respect for anyone that deals with red dirt.

I'm in far east central Oklahoma so I'm out of the red dirt. The 5,000 acre hunting club I trap on is probably 98% hilly oak and pine forests (two power lines and some natural gas lines are the only clearings). I'm going to take off early and set tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, ahead of the Saturday and Sunday all day rain forecasted. My goal is usually to set 40 traps the first day, run those and set 30 more on day two, run those and set 20 more on day three. I keep them set for a week but this year they will be out a little extra time. I trap to get my hunting club dues waived. About one in five years does the plan work out due to some kind of weather problem. With the warm weather forecast I should catch plenty of possum and coon.
