I had let my 2 Beagles out to P and when I called them back in, they came running along with a Racoon right behind, Scared the crap out of me. Med sized, back of it's neck was seriously chewed up, ran right up the steps to the deck, and looked liked it was gonna go in the house with the dogs. I slammed the door in it's face, and grabbed the .22 and shot it in the head.
My first thought was Rabies, but on reflection I think it was a released/run off pet that was used to dogs and living in a house.

I'd go with rabies. Make sure your dogs are up to date with vaccines.
