Brother & myself bought our dad 1 in 243, late 80's. Good shooting rifle, dad killed several deer. Not the best trigger , but darn good rifle, keep the action clean, and oiled. Dad never had a problem with it. I have it in my safe, beting money, pull it out load up and it will still shot well. I also have a soft place for those older rifles.

I have the 742 bought it when I was 14 a few months after buying my 1100 nearly the perfect deer rifle with one issue they have a limited lifespan with 30-06 factory ammo , that is longer than most people need an adjustable gas system or something would have made it last longer.
that said the 760 doesn't suffer over gassing because it is a pump it keeps locked up and you cycle it so the bolt doesn't slam into the receiver
it points like a shotgun fast on target , put a low power variable scope on it and I think you will love it
they are not cheap because people recognize how handy they are
make sure to keep the chamber clean that was one of the complaints on the 742 was the chambers would corrode because with the mag out the bolt wouldn't stay open they would come from a cold wet woods to a warm truck and condense and not everyone does the best maintenance although less of an issue on the 760 as you could keep the slide back easy enough.
as for 30-06 vs 308 , more were made in 30-06 and the actions are all long even if it is a 308 308 is basically 5% less velocity and energy than 30-06 with 15% less recoil , more top end costs you more recoil. the 760 isn't exactly a 1000 yard precision gun , it is a 5 to 200yard deer rifle for the woods.

Amish machine gun.
I’ve got the newer version, 7600 carbine in 30-06. Not much good for long range but great for deer drives.
I’ve been sayin yes sir all day at work, I’ve been sayin yes ma’am at home…

I had one in .35 Whelen, but sold it. Pump rifles aren't accurate enough due to the side-to-side wobble inherent in the slide. Bolt-actions and semi-autos don't have this issue.
The other thing I didn't like was the length of pull--longer than I'm used to and too long for me to shoot comfortably.
I loved the cartridge, though. Someday I may look for a .35 Whelen in a good bolt rifle.

Nail on the head there GCP, same thing happened to mine. Just a small rough patch in the chamber is enough to prohibit extraction for a second or 2. If the rim wasn't snagged off, it would extract soon after. Makes for a PITA single shot. Grandad gave it to me, it's a keepsake now. Checked into getting it fixed years ago, not feasible, if even possible with no parts available. Thanks for the explanation Worked well for many years, but I'd rather had the pump.

Yes, I plan to send this one out for a re-bore to either 6.5 Transgender or 7.82 Manbun. I would go 358 Winchester it isn't a long range pea shooter it is a woods deer/bear thumper . because nothing quite says good night like a .358 225gr slug at 2540fps

I shot my first big buck with my dad's in .30-06 and a whole bunch of deer with my 760 in .243 as has my son and now my granddaughter. I also own one in .222 and hope to smack a coyote or two with it someday.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I picked up a mint 760 in 308 a couple years ago with the intention of giving it to Dad. Once i handled it it was harder to part with but i still let him take it.

I bought one, probably 1968. 30-06. Shot many deer, probably about 70, with it. It was all I ever used for deer. Finally bought a S&W 500 and used that for a couple of years. Went back and used the Remington for a couple of more years. I had to quit hunting because I have a hard time walking. I decided to sell the 760, and I did. That gun was like a brother to me. I loved that gun. What I remember, distinctly is the sound of the action working. It had a very, to me, crisp, clean sound. I miss the gun but it was doing me no good just setting in the safe. I’d give a dollar just to take it out and shoot it one more time.

I actually bought 2 760’s. The first one I bought from Montgomery Ward. The first time I fired it something jammed up an the action would not open. I returned the gun to Montgomery Ward and got my money back. Remember that these were the old days. I then bought another one from a local gun shop. Back then they were “Fair traded”, which meant every body sold for no less than a certain price. This gun shop sold at a reduced price if you paid cash. I remember that I bought the gun for $125.00.

If you use the inflation calculator $125.00 back then is equal to about $11250 today Uhhh .... more like $1250.00. (you probably just stuttered there a bit )

I have an 06 with a Monte Carlo stock I bought new in the late 70’s when I was in HS. It’s the only gun I hunt deer with. One of my two was a BDL grade with the Monte Carlo stock, nicer wood and basket weave checkering.

Has anyone else found a problem with the length of pull being too long on the 760/7600?

One of my two was a BDL grade with the Monte Carlo stock, nicer wood and basket weave checkering.
I believe the Basketweave pattern was made from 68-72. My Dad and I each had one. I got rid of mine years ago but he still has his. That sounds right. Both of mine had the See-Thru scope mounts that were popular back then. I think I paid around $250.00 for mine in the late 70's, early 80's. Wish I still had them.
Eh...wot?

Has anyone else found a problem with the length of pull being too long on the 760/7600?
Jim Fourteen inches seems to be the American standard for LOP. I just bought a Model 94 with a 13 1/8" LOP. Too short for me but a slip-on Pachmayr recoil pad brought it to 14"s on the button. Perfect for me. I'm 5' 10".

Has anyone else found a problem with the length of pull being too long on the 760/7600?
Jim No, but then I grew up using my dad's from the time I was nine years old, so I probably unconciously compare the length of pull of every other gun I ever shoot to that. Did yours have a recoil pad? They came with an aluminum buttplate and if someone replaced that with a recoil pad it would make the length of pull longer. I grew up using my dad's 760 in 270, even though I got my own bolt gun when I was 12, I grabbed my dad's pump whenever I could. I found one just like his about fifteen years ago that a friend was willing to sell and bought it. It had a much harder trigger pull and I ended up replacing the hammer spring, which made it much better. I own quite a few rifles, but to this day if something jumps up in front of me and takes off running, that is the gun I want in my hand. My dad bought his used when he was 12 years old, and he is 68 now. Finally retired it last year and bought himself a 300 mag. Between the two of us that gun killed an awful lot of deer, bear, and elk. By the way, mine isn't a tack driver, but it will shoot under 1.5 MOA,with the right loads. I worked up a load for my dad's that would consistently group an inch and a half at 350 yards. Way better than a pump is supposed to be able to shoot. I always wanted a carbine model, I know a couple people who have them (in 30 06) but they aren't willing to part with them.

Jim no mine is 13 even to the back of the aluminum but plate it is a little short but I manage the butt stocks on the 740 74 742 7400 4 6 76 760 7600 are all the same just checkered differently

If you do a bit of research you'll find fourteen inches advertised as the standard LOP. Fourteen inches is probably the most common LOP on American made guns out there.

Fourteen inches is fine for me. Mine must have been more like fifteen, and maybe it did have an added butted; I don't recall.
Oh, yeah: and the trigger sucked. Way too heavy and creepy.
Not a fan.

I had two, regret selling them both. Both were chambered for 30-06. I had the same rifle. It was very reliable. i wanted a semi-auto. I traded it in on a 762 BDL deluxe specially made for a left handed person. It had a left handed safety and a left handed cheek piece, 30-06 caliber. I was one of a kind. Still have it. It has killed a bear, lots of deer and elk. And a couple wild hogs.

I knew the 740 had quite a few issues, but the later 742 remedied some of those. Only problem I'd ever had with it was once a broken extractor.

I have a Remington 760 that I bought brand new fall 1969. Chambered in 30 - 06 . 18 1/2 inch barrel . $135.00 with box of shells. Put a Williams receiver sight and sling used several years. Eyes got old and put a scope on it . still use it. It has served me well. Joe Dinitto is an Adirondack hunter and one of the best deer trackers alive. He carries a 760. Larry Benoit was probably the best that's ever lived. He carried a 760 in .30-06. Remington came out with a commemorative to honor him.

RH gun with a cheek plate and safety for a lefty. They would still throw hot brass down your shirt color though.

Fourteen inches is probably the most common LOP on American made guns out there. mine may have been cut down before I bought it if it was they did a very nice job of it , there would have been plenty of years for that to have happened I would like it about 14" now but I bought it when I was a little shorter at 14 years old 13 3/4 or 14 is really common Rem made a bunch of their 700 rifles 13 3/8 for a while really around 12 is generally considered youth and 13-14 is common for adult guns

I just went back and looked at this thread. One thing I remember about that gun, the 760, was how easy it was to carry. It seemed to just lay in your hand and carry balanced, just right.

They look like they would be,30/06 or 308 in the carbine style is what I am really looking for. Since rifles weren't deer legal here in Indiana until recently (they aren't legal on public ground, except straight wall cartridge), used rifles aren't easy to find. Any recommendations for locating one?

I hunt with the 760 Gamemaster that my dad bought from sears catalog in 1953, that makes it 70 years old this last fall. He shot his first deer with it that year when less than 20,000 were shot here in Wisconsin. He was a very good shot with open sights, but me not so much. so I put a scope on it in 1988. I told the gun shop that it would have to be be drilled and tapped, but they told me all 760s were drilled and tapped, but when I picked it up they said ya you were right. Cant tell you how many times I have thought about dad on opening day and a buck shows up while I am holding that gun, guess it doesnt get any better than that I like that story, thanks. I have my dads 740, 30-06 he bought new. That and a Hornet was the only CF rifles he ever owned ... or needed. His last shot through it killed a deer in 98. Hasn't been shot since. I think about taking it out for some killing, but always put it back in its place. Thanks

It seemed to just lay in your hand and carry balanced, just right. built on a scaled down model 11-48 shotgun chassis I recall hearing the 28 ga size is the same as the 740/760 receiver carries like a shotgun , fast to the shoulder like a shotgun , but shoots a rifle bullet.

Would the model 14 be the predecessor of the model 760? sort of Remington always was in to the pumps John Pederson designed the model 14 it was a tube feed the pump rifle was always a good idea but always seemed to loose on price point to the Lever the 14 used a tilting bolt lock up like a shotgun the 760 uses a rotary bolt for high pressure cartridge
