I live near the Mason/ Dixon line And most years they do not show up until Jan l find it be the best duck hunting in my area when the temps overnight are in the 20.s or erven better if it is between5 and 15 degrees and the daytime highs are in the 30 or lower range The colder it is here thebeter te duck hunting is Yup, that is great waterfowl hunting weather! They spend less time loafing and more time feeding when it's cold - keeps them moving around more.

We still have 100s of Mallards on the river out back, that's usually frozen or partially on the banks where they can feed. The lakes and sloughs get skim ice and push them to the river. With all the rain lately water levels are up, providing more feed. I really don't see them moving unless there's a big freeze. Also, our season ended Dec 3rd so there is no hunting pressure.

Speaking of a weird season , as some have mentioned, I was out shooting my bow on Christmas day. During windy lulls, I was hearing Sandhill cranes passing over. Very unusual. They're normally all well past us by now.

Sandhills are going over today with this north wind. I saw a small flock of mallards and blacks going into a ditch that has water crests in it. They are always there late in the season, but it's 46, a drought, so I am sure they are 50 miles north where there are big lakes and open water to raft up on.
