Does Maryland have mandatory Trapper Ed.? For all new trappers, yes. If they only have one class per year is poor planning or is it one way of phasing out trapping in the liberal state.

Personally I don’t find Mandatory Trappers Ed as anti trapping. Be more aligned with preservation of trapping ! other than you cant find a class without traveling hundred miles or more....not enough teachers, kids will just not trap because to big of a pain to complete class. if you think gov or more regulations is a good thing you are alining yourself with democrat views. i would rather see less restictions on what we do! This! Mandatory trappers education absolutely reduces the number of young people trapping UNLESS you can ensure every podunk town in the state has a course, which NEVER happens. When I first started trapping, my single mother was so poor that she picked up soda cans to take them back for the deposit for gas money to get to work. You think she could have taken me to a trapping course over an hour away?

doulbe edge sword i guess and i am sure the classes are informative,glad you was abale to get your grandson involved hippie thats great. but if i had to rely on my dad or grandpa to take me to class it would have never happened.. if i would have waited to take the class when i was old enough to drive i dont think it would have happened either as my intrestes had changed. i started trapping on my bicycle for rats and my dad was not impressed but an oldtimer in town gave me 25 cents a rat on the carcass and helped me out with traps. how many kids do we lose because of restictions? classes?alot i think look at your conventions, fur sales,trappers in the field ect ...not many young people anymore at these events or activities i think if you dont start trapping at a young age your not likely to get invoved.... idaho classes are few and far between Right now there are 14 classes being offered in Idaho January to March. How many do you want? How many counties are in your state? One per county should be the absolute minimum if your classes are mandatory imo.

Jim Yep, unless you trapped here since 2011. I trapped since 1960 and when I moved here in 2017, I had to take the course since I never had an Idaho Trappers License. I am glad I took it. Learned some good things and had some things cleared up.

Yotetrapper. There are 44 counties. We would never get enough trappers to attend if every county had to have a trapping course and facilities would be impossible to get for every county. Each Idaho Fish and Game office only has so much trapping equipment and other supplies to distribute to its instructors. Also, Idaho has a small population compared to most other states. The county next to mine only has 756 residents. Heck, I don’t even know of any State that offers Hunting Education Courses in every county. Georgia previously offered H/E in every county, but it's wasn't practical or efficient. Now, it's only offered where there are better facilities that can accommodate 2 or 3 dozen students, especially any with special needs....as required by law.

Here in KS a kid can take the course entirely on line. Even in this little town we have a library with a public computer. Maybe some of you could push your state association to proposing it for your state also. some states recognize a certificate from any state. I believe you don't have to be a resident to take the course. It is also free. Can be done at the kids own pace. Its even got someone reading the whole thing for those who don't read well. Its a good course and won't hurt anybody.
