It IS fun following that bouncing ball and the endless speculation about what will happen (or is happening) on the beaver market. As always, it all boils down to supply and demand.
We know that demand is solid, so the only loose end is supply. And to me that's what makes all of this so interesting. Soon FHA will announce how many beaver they will have on their first sale. My guess is that it won't be significantly more than last year's first sale. That could light a fire under the felt buyers to be a bit more aggressive. Now the unknown is how many beaver Groenewold (and any other smaller players) are collecting. I don't think they ever reveal numbers, but there was a rumor that they are easing up a bit on prices being paid in the southland anyway.
But yesterday's Malvern sale in Arkansas seemed to be solid according to reports.
Meanwhile I've hard rumors that via private treaty the major felt buyers are now at $24/lb. This will likely allow some of the country collectors (who increasingly are weighing beaver and paying by the lb) to pay up to $20 and still make margin.
It's all fun in this thing we call the fur market. .......Until it ain't! I wouldn't have taken less than 20, 2 weeks ago. If they paid 18 a lb for fall and southern goods my January and February are worth more. At least to me. Less than that I will ship. Looks like I'm going to adjust up. At the colorado sale last week the beaver did well also.

Groenwold is buying less than they thought they would I don’t know what that means but it was stated. Curious as to where you heard that? But if so that is a good thing to support solid prices going forward. I was doing some mental calculations a bit ago and to me it appears that beaver prices are roughly three times higher than what they were two years ago. Ain't that swell? And castor is 1/3rd it was 3 years ago.

maybe guys trapped out spots last year? I can tell ya I went to set some traps this afternoon and had trouble find beaver in some spots that are usually good for a few. I think ours got hit pretty hard last year and haven’t rebounded yet.

I sold my winter beaver about a week ago and was very happy with the price of green beaver. This year is by far the nicest run of beaver I have ever had with only 2 smalls out of around 50 critters.
I have nothing clever to put here.

I sold my winter beaver about a week ago and was very happy with the price of green beaver. This year is by far the nicest run of beaver I have ever had with only 2 smalls out of around 50 critters. Sounds like they would have been good ones to finish and send...

The beaver population is a fraction from 20-25 years ago in certain areas of this state. There are several theories on the reason(s). Other areas still have good populations. Undertrapping beaver is worse for the health of the resource than overtrapping. They can come back a lot quicker from overtrapping decline than they can from an undertrapping decline.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

The last time I trapped ARK. there were as many beaver as stars in the sky. Hard to believe they got hit hard by trapping or shooting. Maybe that is a local situation. I worked the Petite Jean MGT area back in those years. There running pretty thin here within a 10 mile radius of home. Unfortunately for me the thinning process happened before the popularity of the Stetson hat took off. At least the castor paid well and there was plenty of bounty money. The surprising thing is I live near some backwater of the Arkansas river. Normally good for beaver yearly but the last two seasons they haven't replenished.

Gators have about wiped the beaver and nutria out down here on Millwood

Whitecliffs the gators aren't bad here. I'm thinking the dry weather we had kept the ditches dry leading to the oxbows I trapped so no new beaver moved in. As for the backwater off he river I figure it must be another trapper that is working that area although I haven't seen any sets.

I think in my area it has a lot to do with dry weather, ditch digging, ditch mowing and trapping. I think we saw a big boom for several years because we didn’t do a lot of those things, and now we are and they’re getting back in check. ( IN PLACES )

here in my part of Ky(eastern) we have a of of beaver but you have to jump spots like crazy to catch numbers..Then Ky is about 95% privately owned, so every little colony is on a different persons property.. Often times its a creek with no one in sight and no way to find out who owns it to even ask.. I love beaver trapping above all else, save mushrats but man it frustrating sometimes..State owned right of ways are not open to just trap like some states, you have to get permission from the state which is a giant pain the butt. I just spent a week getting permission to trap one single colony that are causing drain problems and that permission does not extend to other right of ways... All river banks are privately owned and the river bed is privately owned. You touch the bank to set a trap, you need permission... You can float and fish but the second you touch dirt you need permission..
It takes longer to get permissions than it does anything...

What are you hoping to AVERAGE before commission if you ship? Just curious. As much as I can, lol! I averaged low 40s both sales last year with highs close to 70 and I have bigger beaver this year. Not as many and probably not as many selects, but no dinks. $50+ maybe? Who knows? We'll see.
