Old grinder gave up on me a couple months ago. About halfway through a full day of grinding. Figured I'd built back bigger and hopefully better. Just need belts to be grinding. Will paint it and maybe buy a second grinder to run on it for edible foods.Need switch too, and will get a foot operated switch too.

Might be a good idea to design and build a pulley / belt guard for the sake of safety.

But I am looking into a plexiglass shield to keep stuff off motor and idler shaft. I'll try to incorporate it it around belts and pulleys.

I would have probably mounted it flat. Like on a 2"x12" or better yet angle iron/ square tubing? A man needs a good grinder!!!

I've seen a lot of lure makers using this style of grinder. What is the benefit to having a grinder separate from the motor as pictured above, as opposed to something like a 1hp LEM or Cabelas grinder?

I agree it will be top heavy and prone to tip over when least expected. I think I would find a place for it to be used and pour yourself a small concrete pad with (4) protruding bolts and leave it mounted permanently then get yourself a custom tarp cover made for it to slip over. Or, if you wanted to put it away out of the weather you could unbolt it and move it a more protected spot when not in use.

No need for another grinder. Just hose it off good and you're good for your household meats

In my opinion, no gears to wear out and a much heavier duty motor. Not sure how they rate the horse power on those self contained grinders but my old "3/4" hp grinder had a motor that I could hold in the palm of my hand. Lot of difference between this 3/4 hp motor on this one and the 3/4 hp motor on my old self contained #12 grinder.

Actually not top heavy at all. I can push the top over at least 20 degrees and it comes back vertical. As far as tripping I walked around it 23 times blind folded last night. Motor hit me in the the knee 18 of the circles but could trip over the 15 " wheel it mounted on until I got too dizzy at the 22 mark. Couldn't even really even touch it without running into motor with my knee or grinder with my chest first. If I'd been sober I'm sure I could have got to 24. Ill post video when wife wakes up.

I had a very old big grinder I just sold just last year. I had a problem with the belts slipping on the pulleys when it got choked up too much. I couldn't get enough tension to fix the problem. I tried belt dressing but it didn't seem to work much.

I may buy this and try to do whole rats and quartered beaver bones and all. I saw a YouTube video where rats were run whole, then run through a second time. My biggest concerns would be how difficult this is to disassemble in order to clean clean and how thoroughly it could be cleaned.

Some guys run loaves of bread thru their grinders to help clean them out. I have never done that, but it may help a lot using the Italian loaves. Get some out-of-date bread at Walmart or some other local store. I take my knife and plate out but leave the auger in place, then I run a few old rags that are just big enough to rub the sides of the grinder throat and run them thru a few times. Works for me.

I soak and hand clean the knife and plates well. Keep your knife and plates sharp you will get few problems.

I don't run bone thru my units. I bought one of those stone sharpening kits on line a few years ago. They work well. Just install and turn on your grinder briefly. You get 2 stones for sharpening. One for the knife and one for the plate.

I've done it in my edible grinder, and it works good. It tends to leave about a half a pound of meat in the tube and not grind into burger when you are done. Running a little bread or a potato through pushes all that meat out and cleans most of the little chunks off pretty good.

The link was to a small wood chipper that does limbs up to 1.5 inches. discharges straight out the bottom, works nicely for putting a bucket underneath. It's electric, not gas

Be sure and update us if you get it. Doesn't look like it has much of a throat to feed carcasses through, but not too spendy if you could feed large enough chunks bone and all through it.
