appears homemade. modern spring, chain and clevis, and modern hardware, bolts/nuts. interesting though.

It’s a Michael Benz trap from British Columbia Canada
Could be used on different animals it’s a bait trigger.

Dd both are Michael Benz traps
I’ve had the exact same traps both styles numerous times.
Your trap there with the extra brackets was nailed to a dead limb and set down through the ice with birch on the trigger.

The top trap was probably set with a piece of meat up a tree or on dry land as a killer trap.

Michael Benz made a lot of traps many different styles. Some of them look nothing like the above versions.
