i've always nightlatched my traps with a file, but have about 5 dozen new ones and i'm thinkin a dremmel would be alot faster, lol.

so....what tip/piece do you guys that use a dremmel to nightlatch use to do this???

You're not going to be able to control a Dremel as well as you can control a file.

i don't use a dremel but i do use a die grinder with a cut off wheel, works great, hust don't get crazy

And Kevin I am no mechnic but I can control the blasted thing quite well.

I am not sure which tip I use, or what it is called.. It looks like a wheel of abrasive grit... If you go to an auto parts store that sells dremmel parts they will have a great selection to choose from.

It will take 5 or 6 of these to get through that many traps but it is much faster than a file.

Oh and hang onto the trap and don't go touching after you finish grinding as thye metal gets hot. LOL

I use little abrasive cut off wheels. They work really nicely. But as far as contorl; you have, at least in my opinion, much better control with a file. Plus, it doesn't take much to make a latch, no need to get a Dremmel out.

I tried a night latch with a dremmel.... my advice, DONT DO IT. lol... My night latch is about 1/32" I would guess maybe a hair larger and it is too tough to stay consistant and perfectly straight with a dremmel.

Whilst I am night latching I am also smoothing out rough surfaces and other thingys that need dremmeling. LOL

i guess if i file two traps a day i'll be done in a month lol.

i tried one of the wheels and it didn't go too well, lol almost went too far. and it didn't do the sharp angle at the back of the night latch almost rounded out a nightlatch instead of squaring one out.....lol

yeah but Lordy your fingers will cramp up...... hey thats it thats why the pickles are in one spot on the Sonic Burgers, cramped fingers.... LMAO

J lord I use a thick file that that I removed all of the teeth on one of the flat sides making it smooth, then it acts as a quide riding on the bottom of the notch of the pan.
Being that it is smooth it does remove any metal except where you want it.
By thick I mean wider or thicker than the original pan notch automatically making the step of the nightlatch with very few passes of the file.
By keeping the top flat of the file parallel with the top of the pan your nightlatch notch will come out square and even. Try it you might like it and save time.

PS the edge teeth do the cutting

None of my traps have night latches cause I'm not sure how to do it correctly

cletis thats almost exactly how i've done about 100 or so traps with the file. thought maybe a dremmel would be faster lol. i submitted a trap tuning and minor mods to the tman book, with nightlatching in there, just about how you described.

Only added a doz. 1 1/2 softcatch this year, that was enough for me. I'm just thankful that the 750's come nightlatched.

paws-i-trip pans got my vote from now on!

i'da sold ya a dozen 1.5's, got too many, goin mostly #3's.

had to replace the two dozen stolen #3's and got a few dozen more.

night- latching is a time saver on the line. I have witnessed my partner, using this method, not only does it "click", but there is no need to view, weather yer pan is leavel.

JLord, clamp a vice grip on the pan notch for a guide where you want to nightlatch. About 5 or 6 strokes with a file,hit it on a wire wheel and your done. I tried the dremmel, it works, but you still have to straighten it up with a file. You tend to go too deep, then have to shorten it up and straighten it out, so to me there is no benefit.

Tried the dremel method myself. Figured it would take a whole lot less elbow grease to do the night latching. Problem was it very easy to take to much off the pan and wound up doing extra filing to fix the mistake. eeerrrrr!!! I found using a larger file to start the notch and a smaller one to touch it up, doesn't take much effort at all.

If you are going to use a cutoff wheel in the Dremel,always get the ones that are reinforced with fiber.They don't tend to fly apart like the regular ones always do.And always wear safety glasses.I've been hit in the face and glasses with pieces of those regular cutoff wheels and they are going at incredible speed.A variable speed Dremel would be good to so you could get it down to a speed you could control.

The slanted rod dogs are already nite latched and 3 times as heavy as the reg. dogs.

Cletis, that style of file is called a blind file. They are used a lot by gunsmiths, and other folks have uses for them also. You don't have to make a blind file. They are for sale in most hardware stores.

I use the edge of a belt sander. remove the pan and touch to the edge of the sanding belt. real quick and it's nice and square.

Thanks 45/70 I have always got a lot of satisfaction of using my hands, made a blind triangular file to make dovetail slots in muzzleloader barrels for front and rear sights as well as underlugs to hold barrel to stock. I quess frugal is my middle name, LOL
