We just ordered new birds to replace our aging hens. We ordered four barred rocks, four RIR's and two welsumers. Also, for the first time, a pekin duck (white) and a cayuga duck (black).

Eh...wot?

I can't wait to get an egg a day from each bird again. We are only getting one to three eggs a day from the five older birds we have left from the previous flock. It will be October before that happens though.

The ducks are straight run. I thought they'd be hens, hoping they will be.

Eh...wot?

I had a female Pekin when I was a kid she laid an egg a day, rarely missed a day.

Yes similar to chicken eggs and slightly bigger,I would prefer duck eggs over chicken. I once tried a goose egg it may have been one of the nastiest things I've ever ate, I couldn't hardly look at an egg for sometime after that. I had a pet hen turkey her eggs were similar to chicken eggs,

For me the eggs are just a bonus. Chickens are just fun birds to have around. They give me more smiles than eggs

Me too, Michael.

Scott, that's a gorgeous hen. A beautiful name to go with them too.

I think they are a bit rubbery. No one in my family like them as well as chicken eggs. I should hatch some eggs. We haven't in a few years. We get so many crossed up chickens it neat.

They look at me like what I’m saying matters with their head cocked to one side. Chickens are great conversationalist’s just like grandchildren are before they understand what you’re saying.

grin I like when mine would do the same, look at me with one eye, then turn their head to see me with the other eye....as if expecting to verify what the first eye sees ...LOL

Michael, what beautiful land. Smooth rolling hills, perfect to use in layers of habitat . Pathway roads like that always make me want to take a horse right along them for hours .

Your chooks are so fun and pretty ...mine always were underfoot, and wanting to help me till up ground, or smooth it out. They are natural thatchers of grass in spring, too.

In grasshopper seasons, they would run the grid all over the estate, and there would never be any hopper troubles at all after they were done.

Lovely place, and you are clearing/thinning it beautifully.

I didn't want the ducks. My granddaughter has been bugging for one. So my wife ordered two for her and two for my grandson. I talked her into canceling two of them so we're only getting two. They only sell them straight run so maybe I'll get two drakes and will never know if I like duck eggs or not. I'm hoping for at least one hen.

Eh...wot?

I have around 300 chickens to pick through for breeding stock for this year. Over half are roosters. It's going to take a few days to pick the very best ones. Most are bantams or in the case of the Malaysian Seramas, bantam size.

In standard size layers, I have some ISA browns, which are a cross between a white Rhode Island rooster and a red Rhode Island hen. I bred them to a red Rhode Island rooster and have about 60 young ones. I have a few Rhode Island reds and some Silver Laced Wyandottes I hatched too.

I have mine mostly for pest control but enjoy the eggs as well.
