I was in bad a few minutes ago and I heard a large bug flying in my bedroom. As I'm listening to it get louder and its lands on my back and just like that my back is on fire. I jump up and turn on the light and see this crawling on my blanket It's not the biggest one I've seen, but it's the first one to attack and sting me. I'm not allergic to be stings. But this one is stinging a bit. Lol Do you think it might have just been rabid?

Japanese hornet. Yes it can kill you if you are allergic to bee stings. Especially bad if you get stung around throat area. Death is rare but could happen due to swelling or anafolactic shock. I was stung once years ago by one that was in my truck. I thought I was shot by a 22 rifle during a driveby shooting. That insect is well under an inch if that's standard paper. The smallest worker, Japanese Hornets are about 1 1/2 ", over 50% bigger. The insect pictured appears to be a species of yellow jacket. I got stung by one 2 days ago, that got in my shirt, on my left shoulder and armpit. Yellow jacket stings can kill people who are allergic. Keith

I found a nest a week or ten days ago when I was cleaning up an old pile of wood. Got nailed three times before I realized what I had walked into. Felt like I was on fire. They hurt.

Did a little research and is a European hornet. The markings are the same Always thought the were the Japanese type. Shows how much I know about them.

We incorrectly called them Japanese hornets but the ones we have are actually European Hornets which is what I believe is the one in the original post. They do pack a punch for sure. Got popped on the top of the head by one in my pre-teen years. I did not have any complications from it but it was very painful for a long time. So far, I have managed to avoid getting stung by one of them again and hope to keep it that way. They nest mostly in hollows in trees here are attracted to light at night and have a nasty disposition.

Here's a picture of an Asian murder hornet. They found a few nest of them near Bellingham Washington just south of Vancouver Canada. They are trying to track them down and eliminate them. They are catching them alive and putting tracking collars on them to lead them back to their nest. Keep those things on the west coast. A fly made like them would be a fish magnet.
