Just trying to get a idea how you guys are lugging your gear around. I have 2 places i can use my 4 wheeler and intend on doing so. But i have a few other places i will need to hoof it in. I was thinking about using my deep Otter brand ice fishing sled but without some snow I think it will be difficult. I just bought a bunch of trapping stuff off a guy and he gave me a old army pack with a 5 gallon bucket hooked on it that will work for some stuff as well. What do you use?

I use a backpack designed for field medics in the military. Lots of little pockets for all sorts of gear, a good frame to carry the weight comfortably, and easy access to everything even with gloves on.

I use a cheap lunch box with the plastic tub inside. Dry / waxed dirt in the tub with sifter and trowel on top of dirt. Everything else goes in the little pouches on the sides. It has a shoulder strap and that's nice

Been thinking that through myself. Lets say your going to be carrying alot of weight. Even with a hand full of traps. I swear this is what disposable stakes were created for. I got my system up to a hypothetical 4-5 traps a day by carrying them in. That can very by how fit and strong you claim to be. Metal adds up quick.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

One thing about it - the farther the walk, the more streamlined your gear gets. I have gone in early and cached rebar stakes, could of cached traps also since very few humans would walk into these places. My suggestion would be - Know what and where you want to make sets, get your gear down to the basics.

I use one of those two wheeled deer carts on places I cant drive into. It is a little clumsy in the woods, but it really shines when toting animals back out to the truck. Mine is the old Cabela's Super Mag Hauler, Cabela's doesn't carry them anymore, but they can still be found on Amazon.

That Otter sled might surprise you even without snow, they tend to pull fairly well, especially with the runners you can get for them. Know a guy that uses one without snow for retrieving animals, hikes in with backpack and the sled.

I use a collapsible wagon (heavy duty one) it has thick 2 inch wide wheels max with holding weight is 150# so you can get a lot in there and it pulls easy and compact during storage. Only down fall is its not to good when you have snow on the ground then i use a sled. Something like this but if you search you can find bigger ones that hold more https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076WWSXQ...Y2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

My lines are both hoof-in and drive-up. I've found the Loring pack basket serves both functions very well. They are indestructible and light. They live up to their reputation, and the owner of the company is a trapper himself.

Construction Tool bag from Lowes for bout $20..1 for land and another for water trapping.
it has 10 outside pockets and a large 1 inside and shoulder strap or handles.
I use shoulder strap ALOT more than handles.

I use tool bags too. 1 for remakes 1 for when setting my traps. 1 for snaring. Everything fits in.

Get permission at a few other places where you can use the atv. Scrap the walk in farms. There is not enough time during trapping season.

For fields I'm not able to drive into I use the little red wagon with the bigger rubber tires on it. Other than that a Lowe's bucket with a smaller white bucket bolted to it for baits and lure in one hand and tool bag in the other does the trick.

I went to tractor supply and bought a tub for mixing mortar. It's a little smaller than a jet sled, but only cost about $20.00. It has holes in the edge for a tow rope and pulls good even without snow. I use this on my beaver lines a lot and it's way easier than trying to haul two or three beaver in a pack. I've used mine for 4 years now and it's still in great shape.

Can we please see a picture of what this looks like half way through the season though when there's a good wet snow that moves through and melts the next day then refreezes? Lol.

Nice work though!

My Chappelle Jet Sled is a very easy pull on level ground, almost runs you over down hill, and can be a trial going up, but slides pretty easy on leaves.

If you gotta do some long walks to trap beaver and no snow, id recommend getting a jet sled and a deer cart. Jet sled rides pretty well on the cart.

I have a Loring Pack basket attached to an old external frame backpack frame for pre snow. After we get snow I have a small Jet Sled I use. Jet Sleds suck in deep powdery snow and heavy brush. But I don't set many traps so I live with it.

Get an otter/jet sled and throw some 10 inch wheels on it. It will go anywhere and still slide over any logs or debris in the way. Then when it snows pull the wheels and axles off and it’s back to using a the traditional sled. The only downfall is when it snows the first time and you forgot to pull the wheels off before going out because it just packs onto the wheels and makes for some hard pulling.

If you line the bottom with adhesive 1/4” neoprene you can eliminate a lot of the rattling of traps and gear on the plastic sled as you pull it along the line. I also riveted some gun magnets to the top ledge of sled so I can store my ice spud and/or trowel out of the way.

Are you putting wheels on the front and back? Or just the back?

Front and back. I put some pillow block bearings attached on the outside and then run the axles through the sled rather than attaching them to the bottom. This way when you get into a marshy/boggy area the slick sled bottom still slides over obstacles freely.

I think I got 10 inch wheels from harbor freight for fairly cheap and used some aluminum 1/2 inch rods for axles. The bearings locking collars (used to hold the wheels on the axle) I got online somewhere.

The only negatives to the setup I’ve had is when going downhill it will coming chasing you down the hill if you don’t get it in front of you first and on rocky trails it’s a bit bouncy and causes the traps and gear to rattle. It’s still probably quieter than the noise a sled makes on the ice or dry ground though.

I'm still pretty new to all of this, but I just modified a 5-gal bucket. I played with the weights of what I attached to the sides to balance everything out. Baits / lures are sealed in oversized glass jars in the bucket so as to not transfer smell to anything else. Will hold 4-5 MB-550s, 4-5 lures / baits, a knee pad, a sifter and a bag of polyfill. Everything else is mounted to the outside.

I’d recommend a sled too if you’re any distance in. Remember, it’s not just what you’re carrying in, but when you make a catch you have to bring that and all your equipment back out.

There's no one method to carry traps and equipment in the field that fits every need. I use several ways mentioned earlier. If not trapping out of the truck, I use my ATV. [Linked Image]
If walking in I use my trapping bucket or sled.
