I'm going to be researching where we could go and have a good shot at gettin in to a mess of hogs, and I figured I would start here. Nobody knows what's going on out there like those here on T-man. So what State closest to Ohio would offer some good hog hunting on public ground. Thanks!

I used to hunt wild boar South of Rio Grand, Ohio in the Symmes Creek portion of Wayne National Forest. I saw lots of damage from rooting and found 3 wallows, but only ever saw 1 piglet sized boar. One of the other guys here told me that the boar have now mostly been trapped out of that area.

My friend, Don, shot this wild boar on his farm near Vincent, Ohio in Washington County.

He gets trail cam pics of a few boar a year, mostly sows with piglets He killed that boar with a 22, when he was shooting squirrels that were eating the corn he puts out for deer.

I saw some boar close to Kaiser Lake, a couple of months ago on Purk Road and damage from wild boar on Zimmerman Road about a mile from where I saw the boar. A bowyer, who I know, told me his son killed 27 small boar back in by the river, in that area. A father and son, I used to sell a lot of goose eggs too, went on a huge drive, after a light snow few years ago, where the guys surrounded and drove the woodlots in the area. They thought they had exterminated them all, but obviously missed some. The boar in that area are out of ones that escaped from a farm by St. Paris, Ohio.

Some of the deer hunters, who hunt my friend James's farm, got trail camera pictures of a boar on his farm, back in January. James's farm on Ohio State Route 56, between Routes 4 and 29. That's 6.8 miles from my farm.

Well my ex girlfriend lives in Prineville, OR so I'd say the closest population is about 7 hours Southwest of me.

You could get lucky and find some around Vinton County before the USDA catches the last ones. Texas and Louisiana has a bunch you can either pay or some cases get paid to hunt them.

This is my area and the USDA has made the hogs extinct in Gallia county l, could be a few left but I haven't even heard if a hog in over a year.

Keith, thanks for the info. I knew they're were small pockets down there but figured my chances slim. I was hoping that maybe I wouldn't have to travel to far, like maybe Tennessee. We want to take a freezer with us and bring back some meat. Looks like we may have to go further south. That's ok.

pcr2, I'm hoping that when I get my rifle sighted in it can be used to castrate hogs out to 200 yards. grin

Some huntable populations in SC. Also some guides.

You wish to hunt with dogs?

I don't have dogs and really don't want a guide. Just a poor boy hunt on public ground or maybe get lucky and get offered some private ground once we get to where were going.

Killed a few about a month ago in Florida on private land with my buddy. Chances are slim you will find anyone/place that will let you hunt them for free. They can complain all they want about wild hog populations but trust me, they don't want them completely gone. Find that guy who complains about them and all the damage they do and just ask him how many he wants you to kill. You'll be quickly shut down for permission to hunt or he'll tell you how much you'll have to pay to shoot each one. I've seen the damage they do and I'm sure if I was a farmer, I'd feel differently about them. They are excellent eating by the way. I always tell my buddy who lives in Florida that they wouldn't have nearly the nuisance hog population in that state if I lived there lol......

If you have connections Florida is a great hog state. On public ground the hog hunting is only open during deer season. Private ground they consider them the property of the landowner and you can kill them about any way you want. As stated above, getting on that private ground will be a bit tough without coughing up some loot.

Great pic Danimal! And the thing that chaps my behind is those Farmers that won't give permission or want to charge a fee are probably getting subsidized crop damage monies. I believe the landowners have every right to do as they wish with their land, but the tax payers shouldn't have to fund them if they don't want to fix the problem that's doing the damage. Kind of a rant but I feel better now lol.

Wonder if public land in Florida like the Ocalla National Forest would hold some hogs?

Yes, pretty much all public has hogs for the most part, AND gators! They're flippin everywhere. BUT, hogs and gators are "managed" on any public. Even for the hogs, you will need a license. There is a season and I believe even a quota/drawing for some public areas as well which further proves that they don't want them eliminated. I've taken a few gators there as well. Can't believe they regulate them so tightly considering there are so many. There is no way in this world you could get me swim or wade in any body of water in Florida.
