WackyQuacker,
Did you ever do any comparison between the "round headed" cat stretchers and "normal" ones as far as overall cat lengths? (measured nose to tail base)

I just got through making a bunch of new new stretchers and this topic crossed my mind.

For you guys that are new here: A post was made several years ago showing cats on some very unusual bobcat stretchers with round heads. Like most posts, it seemed like opinions were welcomed. Sooo, I made some comments on them. I would be concerned about loosing length on my bobcats. Because fur buyers take out their yardsticks and measure. Cats under 36" bring less money than cats over 36". Not my rules, just the way it is. When selling big lots of cats, it makes a substantial difference in your paycheck \:\)
Well, the post went south in a hurry with me being called a "know it all" and sarcastically referred to as "hollywood" etc. And I fired back with my own smarty alec comments to wacky. It's hard not to get defensive when you feel someone has personally attacked you, which I did. I have always regretted that egos got in the way of a good discussion of that topic. (They seem to have a way of doing that sometimes.) Anyway, I am bring the topic up again to clear the air and see if any length comparisons have ever been made between the two stretcher styles.

holley er wood checking back in LT \:\) haha (aka driftwood, deadwood, hardwood to some spec,,, oh never mind)

huntinglonewolf, is that your own design? I have an old coon basswood stretcher that looks somewhat like that, but not as exaggerated on the nose.

Do you mark the lengths on the stretchers? 32", 36" and 40". It's handy to have on there when putting up fur.

John, I'm not a woodworker,, I can barely make enough of my own. Making 10 new boards is "bunch" to me.
And if you talking about the round head boards, wrong guy to ask for a pattern \:\)

I made my first cat boards this year. I used both the NAFA and FHA patterns. Comparing them...the NAFA pattern had a noticeable broader and rounder head/neck/shoulder area to the pattern then the FHA board. I noticed that on a small female cat I had a hard time getting any length out of it on the NAFA board. On the larger cats I don't know if it mattered as much. Is that what you are referring too?

Yes, that is what I was referring to. And it's interesting that the two are that much different. You wouldn't think that would be the case.
I wondered if the "round head" boards made up for the length in some other area, like maybe the shoulders? Or the hind leg/base area.

Anyone of you use the wire on the head end like Tom Krause uses. I know bfflbo uses them and also motrapperjohn makes them, I am getting a dozen of them to try.

Yes John, the two buyers I had look at my fur went 32" L, 36"XL and 40" being an XXL and 44" a jumbo. (from what I remember, I'm not a fur buyer)

And not trying to brag or "sound perfect" (as hlw stated), the buyers told me they offered me the highest average price of any offer they made this year to any single large lot of cats. I say this only to make mention that something must be being done right \:\)

And you mentioned just what is said in the fur handling section of bobCATching #1, get the length and keep the cat proportioned. The buyers have told me that some guys try to stretch a kitten 3 inches wide and get it to 36" for a large cat. They said they just laugh and grade it medium.
The board thickness varies with the size of the stretcher. Thicker boards just last longer for me on the larger stretchers, without deforming or taking permanent warps. .

Lynx, what the heck is Mike tyson doing in a cat stretcher post? \:\)

It seems like guys that held their cats this year and sold late did better than the early sellers. A 100% turnaround from last year.

OK.... just did.. virtually IDENTICAL... notice the narrow'd neck...

The stretcher...and SAME CAT out and in..

The same cat stretched "pointy style"... before/after..NOTICE the color is MUCH BETTER with the NM stretch...
