I just need to make sure what I have here before this goes up for sale. According to what I read this is a 1872-79 man. date on this trap. It has a small cast pan, long link chain, looks to be cast jaws. The bottom eye is keyhole shaped. Looks like the spring is stamped 1 line but very hard to tell. To the best of your knowledge what would this trap be worth. I am selling for a friend and don't want to short him. Thanks everybody.

Could I see more photos of the swivel and the bottom of the trap? It could be 1870s, not sure from what I can see. Either way, it is not a high dollar trap. The chain is not original and the condition is not great. Some traps were sold with out chains, but they still came with a swivel.

Would it be better to remove the chain before I try and sell it?

I would say you are close with your dates, early 1870s. I would not remove the chain before you sell it, it does not take away from the trap. Although, the trap would be worth considerably more with the original chain. The swivel is broken and repaired and the chain added. Here is what the chain should look like, long link and the swivel should have a solid closed eye.
