What do they call them in your area?

Of all God's creatures, only the honeybee improves the environment and preys on no other species.

Had I guy in the city tell me when I was setting raccoon traps on the neighbors property that the "moles" were going to get in them and set them off.

After a few questions about these "moles". Yep groundhogs/wood chucks

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Yep, we can shoot them year round and they fill in the gap between turkey season and deer season nicely.

Have to agree with Carl, call them $. When the phone rings the cash register rings at the same time, woodchucks, groundhogs. A great money maker without much effort most of the time. Had one today which is by far the earliest ever. Strange weather, 67 yesterday, will be near 0 in a couple of nights so they won't be back for a while.

Very unusual year for them here also. We have already taken two on Skunk jobs. They either call them Groundhogs-woodchucks- or sometimes gophers. I have had people tell me they are moles, and even Beaver living under their shed. After doing this for a while, nothing surprises you.

Not a bit, they range east to the middle of Kansas, south to mid Arkansas, and NE

I believe that we are having a problem with semantics. Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmot- Marmots are large squirrels in the genus Marmota, of which there are 15 species.

Read the whole reference; not all 15 species are found in the United States. When I hear, or read the term “ground hog” or “woodchuck”, in my mind I picture Marmota monax. The term “marmot” suggests Marmota flaviventris while ““whistle pig” could refer to either.

Unless we refer to the Latin name for a critter we are sometimes left wondering what the poster is talking about. How many different animals are referred to as “gophers”. Even the taxonomists don’t always agree on animal classifications.

Now we have cell phones to compound the problem. I often have no idea of what the poster is trying to say. Don’t folks proofread what they have written before posting???

I wondered why you were so surprised, and I guess your right. Most folks don't distinguish one from another, and colorful local names prevail.
