What method do you guys prefer to trap them this time of year. In a subdivision people worried about kids and dogs. I set three traps Saturday leg holds, one flat set with pee, flat set with red gland lure and a little dirt hole. Caught a yearling male and a raccoon yesterday. Homeowner called this morning and saw the four pups playing again. Any help appreciated. Would the pups go into a baited cage ?

Set 4-5 cages of the appropriate size lured and baited for predators. Set them up close together.

I rarely remove foxes, even if in town. I can usually convince the people to leave them alone until the pups are grown and they move out. They are denning in urban areas to escape predation from coyotes, and due to the fact their numbers are very high and they are adapting to "city living" just like so many other species.

However, in cases where they are creating a safety issue or odor problem, if harassment doesn't work, it is possible to catch them in cage traps. Posi-sets are good, but open baited sets also produce results. For some reason the most effective cages for fox are the Wickenkamps. Don't know why, but they seem to enter them without hesitation. Note: Only the bottom pic is a Wickenkamp.

Also note that on non positive sets the trap bottom is covered with dirt, just like groundhog trapping.

If you're not planning on buying commercial bait and lure, pups are easily trapped with scrambled eggs, dry dog food and sweets. Their curiosity gets the best of them, cans, plastic cups, wrappers etc. I use "homemade" white plastic bait holders as seen in the pic as eye appeal/occupier, with sweet lures. If a structure allows a positive set, I'd shoot for positive sets.

If they frequent the area, there should be a considerable amount of dropping somewhere. If you can locate that area on the property set at least one there, or use a few droppings in an un-baited cage with eye appeal, bed the trap well when possible.

Agree with Ron, foxes often can be asked to leave. If they remain, I would just set the den site with positive sets, double door cages so that the choice is to go through the cage or again, just leave. Have seen lots of pics of foxes caught in traps even as small as double door 9x11 without issue many times, when placed at dens like you would for chucks and skunks, either flush mount or with some sort of nose cone.

Same thing for coon at dens. Traps as small as double door 6x11 have been used with great success over den holes for coon, which makes sense when 5x9's are used in chimney positive sets.
