I'm going to be doing some beaver trapping and will make some drowning cables (3/32"). I'm trying to decide between using the L-style locks or swivels for drowning locks. What is everyones experience/thoughts?

Thanks,
Jake

I have never used swivels, I onl use the L locks. but, I have heard that cable will cut through the swivel.

swivels work for the short term but in the long run I would go to the L locks with the hole just fitting the cable

Swivels will out last the cable. After a few catches the cable will be a mess.

Forget them both and use #2 twist link chain or re-bar !

Yep ! 1" tubing cut at 45 degrees. Blaze color makes it easy to see at set. If the lock is gone a Beaver has found a new home.

MTP sells a similar lock !

I aggree with 2poor, I'll never use wire or cable again. If I can't make a rod work I'll use the chain. The lock works on both. [img][/img] [img][/img]

I make mine just locks like tim does. Rod and chain are the way to go!

I use a round pipe same idea though on the lock. Seems to work great. I have both 3/8 and 1/2" rebar.

Stick it into the bottom of the creek.

Most of the time I don't feel like carrying 30 lbs of rebar a mile and a half down to a creek.

L-lock for me.

I use 7/32 cable, was fortunate to have someone give me a few thousand feet. It fits the swivels very well, 1/8 inch cable won't last very long for beavers and otters on a swivel, because of the hole size. The L locks that come stock on bridger # 5's I replace with the swivels, because their hole size is too big imho.

I can throw 3 or 4 rods and a couple 750's over my shoulder and carry my stakes and pounder in my other hand and go for quit a distance. Weighs alot less than the beaver I have to carry out!
