Any suggestions for bait types and strategies for coyotes?

They sell a paste bait that seems to work for coyotes.

I was one of the several individuals to do independent field testing the collarum back in the early 90's. In fact my testing was done in Arkansas years ago. Our XXX Matrix and Longliner baits and Big 4 lure performed well during my initial testing of the devices. Bob Noonan was along for a few days doing an article with me back then and taking photos. He was part of my initial testing of the device.

There are probably several lures and baits that will initiate a pull response out there. I only can speak of my own personal experience.

The collarum's have their place but you will find fired devices from coon as well as fox and coyotes until you get onto the guiding/blocking part of your set up.

I've been reading some old threads and there's a number of posts about coons and issues w/ the collarum. It's a tough call for me-- would like to acquire the skill of using the collarum as a way to add to my arsenal but honestly not sure if I really want the headaches with it yet.

I have a few baits also for them. The key for the pull vs lick from the animal at least in my area, is location it seems like. In yards and around houses they will pull faster than out in the back 40. or if there are a couple of them there may be a competition thing I don't know really. I have pics of the coyotes just standing there licking out in the farm areas. The more in the open and the k9 feels exposed I think they will pull faster than when in a spot the k9 feels safe and at ease they lick. a hunk of meat wired to the trigger or some fresh fur and skin also helps. My state laws will not allow exposed meat and fur baits for birds of prey. We went to a bone or wood holder. The coon can be a real pain. by making some cable changes it can catch coon.

If legal, light color feathers wired to t-stake....at least that's what Varmintshooter uses.

Got official word that the Collarum is legal in Va. I'm on 5 acres surrounded by hoity toity horse farms and there are fox crossing regularly. With a gazillion barn cats (plus my wife's cat and our dog) around I decided to try the Collarum to get rid of a few Mangy reds. If any of you have and advice and dont want to post it here feel free to shoot me a PM.

Bob, If you'd care to explain the blocking part I'd love to hear it.

Jonesie, I have areas that are open, 2.5 acres of grass, where they cross and I'm guessing this is an area that might get the quick pull response. I also have a wooded section that they use A LOT to transition between the farms. I was thinking about starting there, mostly to keep everything out of sight, but also because blocking like twigs etc would look more natural there than it wood out in a mowed yard.

Lots of coon traveling the same wooded area too..... Last year I ran 4 cages back there and picked up a bunch of them. This year prices are low and I'll probably leave them alone. Any tips on keeping them out?

I don't think you will have a problem with fox pulling on it or coon LOL
