Kinda scratching my head on this one. As long as you boiled them in plain water I see no reason why that would have loosened the ferrule?

Sounds like you had a bad ferrule to begin with.

But hey, that's just me.

I cant say that boiling wont loosen the ferrules, but i cant see how it would do so. I have had new cable stakes that the ferrules werent crimped good on. I always lay alll mine on top of the vise and hit them with a hammer, tightnes them up very good!

you boil them in lye and never had a problem. How long do you leave them in there?

There should not be a problem with boiling in trap dye, however I can see a problem using lye because it will eat the aluminum.

Never boiled any of my cable trap stakes, I dont see any reason to boil them, they will be driven into the dirt well below the trap, and I have never had a problem catching K9's with unboiled cable stakes.

Like mentioned the lye is the problem with the ferrals.... However removing the oils from the inner strands of cable by boiling it WILL shorten the life of the cable. It will begin and continue to corrode from the inside out whenever it gets wet. Over a few years of use it will get weaker and weaker.

As stated above, lye dissolves the aluminum ferrules. If you boiled snares before with no problems, they may have steel ferrules.Lye can also remove the galvanized coating that prevents the cables from rusting.I only boil traps in lye or Sani Flush to remove rust and scale prior to dyeing.I'm not sure why you would boil snares and cable stakes in it.Most people boil them in baking soda.Good thing you didn't use an aluminum pot.
