It has been twenty plus years since I ran a trap line. I started a short line a couple of weeks ago and have been doing ok. I just wanted to see if anybody has every waxed traps like I do.

I run all my traps through logwood/walnut hull dye for about an hour than once they hav all gone through once I an 5 lbs of trap wax to the boiling dye and wait for it to melt. Now I have a slick of wax about 1-3/4 of an inch thick on top of the dye. I put the traps back in for 10-15 muns and bring them out slowly and I am done.

I had never seen where somebody does the waxing in a diffenet pot before. does it make a diffence??

Kevin

I wax in a seperate pot, the wax adheres better to dry traps.

Seperate pot, pure wax. Submerge trap in wax for a minute or two, and pull out. Shake off excess.

Dye and hang out to dry. Wax in a seperate container of pure wax. I usually do the waxing the next day as I do several hundred at one time.
When I wax them, I place a nail in between the jaws or one of the chains link, place in boiling wax for a few mins. to ensure the trap is hot - then lift out and hang until dryed. As long as your wax is hot and the trap is allowed to get to temp, then you'll end up with a nice THIN coat of wax on them.

until you get the hang of it, watch the trap in the wax, and hwen you see the coating of wax wear off then it is at temp and time to take it out.

It's going to take more than 5 lbs of wax however to get started. I used about 40lbs to get a pot started and I add a 10lb block every time I can afford to get one. My pot is 16in sq. by 28 high so it will hold alot of wax. I'm just saying 5 lbs is a bit thin to try and submerge traps in even with a tall narrow type pot.
I went to the bowling ally and bought 3 bags of rosin and cut them open and added to the hot wx. This will make your wax adhere to the traps much better and it will wear longer on the trap. Just some thoughts. RD

well does the wax adhere to the traps?
if it does, keep your method. no harm done. just a different way than others.

make sure it is not chunky on the trap though, and you don't want a thick layer of it either.

I've got the trapping fever.

I have a nice thin layer of wax on my traps and have not had any trouble with digs or refusals I am going to stay with my way for the rest of the years and may try different pots next year. Maybe not.

Kevin,
I'm glad to see some one else does it the same as me. I was starting to get a complex. That was the method I learned way back when and it works fine for me.
