Hey guys and gals. Just have a few questions abt taking care of collector traps. I have some in new condition. I wanna keep that way. Also have some with rust and some dyed. The question i have is will dyeing old rusty traps hurt value?. Thanks for any help?

In my opinion, old traps should be left with just their regular trap rust. I dont think they should be dyed. Having said that, IF you absolutely want to put some sort of coating on them, ordinary logwood trap dye would be a much better choice than dipping them. My experience is that trap dye is fairly easy to remove. Removing dip is a pain in the butt.

As far as your new traps go, just leave them the way they are. No need for any coatings. I've got factory new traps that are 40 plus years old and they still look factory new. You will want to keep them in a dry area and not in a barn or a damp basement.

the problem with traps that are dyed is when you sell them. some people are leary that you are trying to hide something, maybe a repair or some other issue, spring patina doesn't match the trap patina etc.

I gotta ask. How do you remove logwood dye?

Personally I would not die a collector trap. If you want to clean the excess rust off use WD40 and a plastic hard bristle brush.

I think those slightly concave jaws were a short-lived production. The holes
in pan were made by the user IMO.

First of all, I am NOT saying you should dye collector traps. I think they should be left the way they are found - with natural rust , in some cases.

Having said that, some folks find it necessary to put some sort of "finish" on the trap to "protect it". Trsp dye is preferred over dip or rustoleum or silver paint. Yes, I have seen an entire trap collection painted silver - because it made them look so "nice and clean."

I have had good success removing trap dye with soap and water and an OLD tooth brush. Msybe I just got lucky and had traps that were not dyed properly, so the dye was easy to remove'.

I do have some traps in my personal collection that are very nicely dyed. No wsy would I attempt to remove that dye.

So what's the triumph worth. The pan is not readable.

In my opinion, $10.00 to $12.50.

More value to a guy decorating his "man cave" because the Triple Clutches make it look really cool. smile

+1 on that price. Triumph made some unique traps.
