114 Newhouse traps are in my opinion really neat traps. They were great trapping traps. Most people believe there were only three different variations, the A.T.C (Animal Trap Company) with stamped No's in the pan, the Animal Trap Company with raised letters, and the O.C. (Oneida Community). These traps can also have different state, government, and Canadian stamping on them. However, there is a fourth model that few people are aware of. Some refer to the trap as a transition trap. I don't really know what model it is, but I do know there have only been a few found. These traps have No. 4 springs on them, and No. 4 jaw posts. The chain is flat linked and the ring is like the Canadian 114 traps which are not round but rather more oblong (check out the photo) The pan will be stamped Oneida with Pat. 9- 11- 26 stamped under the Oneida. All this is stamped crossways on the pan (please checkout photo). Several years ago a collector found about six of these traps. When looking at your 114 Newhouse traps always check them out closely. You never know what may just turn up. Greg

What was the jaw spread on these traps?

Cascade could you guess at what year these where made?

Have you seen many others and where they all exactly the same?

Jwill I put this trap in storage and can't get at it. I believe the jaw spread is the same as a regular 114. Lots of mink, Ive only had this one in my hands. I bought it several years ago at one of the Western Nationals. Greg

I had a gov stamped 114 that I sold. I'm still sick about it. I have a backup tho and it's almost as nice but the history isn't as good

Fishguts, since those traps are in good condition, look those traps over closely for stampings.I hear if you find two bears dancing with each other stamped on the trap it is more valuable.

yup one of the first things i looked for was standing or dancing bears, didnt see any. but they are in for a tooth brush cleaning and maybe something will show up. but if not im still walking on cloud nine with the way they are. it was hard to get to sleep the night i went and seen them, i had to get cash and the next day i was worried they would be gone.

Although I've never even set a 114, I agree, it's a near perfect size designed trap.
Width of a number 4 NH. Height of a 4 1/2. Assembled with heavy wolf trap parts.
Minus the teeth, if still in production, I bet there would still be trappers singing their
praises.

First collector trap I ever purchased was a 114 from an old trapper from Billings MT. He had used them.
Guess that one started this affliction.

I believe he's referring to Cascade's seemingly limitless knowledge of the 114. So much so that he is much like a book of info.

Thank you, Paul. I really enjoy talking to people about old traps and their history. Fishguts, you most likely will not find standing bears on a 114. The standing bears came out around 1911 to 1915, and the 114's were made from 1936 till 1966 according to what I've read. On 4 1/2 Newhouse traps the only standing bears would be on Canadian traps and they would be dancing bears. Greg

thanks cascade ya my 114 doesn't even have anything on the springs, I was praying the 5 did but that would probably put it to early for the bears. on what traps and why did they put the bears?
